Martha Bashford, sex crimes chief who didn’t prosecute Harvey Weinstein, resigns

The chief of the sex crimes unit at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office resigned on Friday — amid Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial, The Post has learned.

Martha Bashford put in her retirement papers after four decades with the office, DA Cyrus Vance Jr.’s office has confirmed.

“…40 years is a long time to stay in one place, and it is time for me to give notice that I will be moving on,” she wrote in a letter to Vance dated Feb. 7 and obtained by The Post. “Please tell whomever you choose to be the next Chief that they are getting by far the best position this Office has to offer — in my humble opinion.”

The sex crimes unit did not oversee the prosecution of Weinstein after Vance replaced veteran sex crimes prosecutor Maxine Rosenthal in 2018 with Assistant DA Joan Illuzzi-Orbon, who is not part of the unit.

Rosenthal came under fire after she allegedly referred to one of his accusers, who was later excised from the case over credibility issues, as one of “Harvey’s girls,” sources said.

On Bashford’s recommendation, Vance made the controversial call not to prosecute Weinstein in 2015 for allegedly groping Italian model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez even though the disgraced film mogul was captured on an NYPD audio recording apologizing for his conduct.

Oh, and what else is interesting here, is the curious email about Seth Rich. Now Seth Rich was a DNC staffer, who was murdered here in Washington DC and the murder remains unsolved. Now there are those who question how and why he was murdered and what happened there and you can just imagine, there are people who allege he was involved in the Wikileaks leaks or the DNC hacking. I don't know if any of that's true, I do know that when a political person like Seth Rich is murdered, politics intervenes in the investigation in his death.

So we've tried to find some, do some FOIA work there, we haven't gotten anywhere, because the death investigation is still open. But the FBI, I think it told us it had no documents. Well, lo and behold out of this Peters Pa, uh uh Lisa Page, Peter Stzrok document, there's references to Seth Rich. Let's see what it says here, there is a uh, FB, there's a media inquiry about um, so an official who's name they redact, writes, various news outlets are reporting today that Julian Assange suggested during a recent overseas interview, that DNC staffer Seth Rich was the Wikileaks source and may have been killed because he leaked the DNC emails to his organization and that Wikileaks is offering $20,000 dollars for information regarding Seth Rich's death last month. Based on this news, we anticipate additional press coverage on this matter. I hear that you are in class today, however when you have a moment can you please give me a call to discuss what involvement the bureau has in the investigation. An, a Washington field office responds, I'm aware of this reporting from earlier this week, but not any specific involvement in any related case.

I don't know what any of that means, I, I'm reading it to mean we're not involved, but it reads oddly. Um, so if I'd received that email, I'd would've written back, what do you mean? Is it yes or no? An unidentified agent then writes to uh both um, Moffa who's an FBI guy and um uh, Stzrok, just FYSA (for your situational awareness) I squashed this with redacted. So there's a blank. Stzrok then forwards that email chain to Page. So that's curious. You know it looks like they squashed it maybe, uh with a uh media outlet, I don't know. But they're talking about Rich here, they suggest the FBI isn't doing much of anything on it, but they squashed uh, an inquiry, which is a substantial issue.

I mean Assange, you know, I don't know whether he was telling the truth there, but you know certainly that would be enough if, you know, it would've been enough for the FBI to investigate Donald Trump. But not enough for the FBI to launch an investigation into the Seth Rich murder. That's what that shows. Isn't it curious, what they decide to investigate and what basis they base that decision on. Trump they got garbage, rumors, they start spying on him, and other innocent Americans, targeting Manafort, targeting General Flynn, here you've got someone publicly suggesting that Rich was murdered for, somehow being involved in the DNC leaks, and the FBI, their response is how do we quash that. Meaning, we're not doing anything. And that's the most charitable reading of this, so that's interesting.

A California lawyer was busted by ATF agents for allegedly selling a number of unlicensed guns and methamphetamine, authorities said Monday.

The suspect, Melinda Romines of Anaheim, acted as a middle man for black-market arms dealers, buying the weapons then re-selling them to customers, the ATF said in a statement.

In one of the deals, she allegedly sold a .40-caliber pistol, an AR-style rifle and a silencer to a buyer in a Los Angeles parking lot in 2018, the agency said. Both of the guns had their serial numbers scratched off, according to the statement.

In another parking lot a few months later, she allegedly sold another illegal .45-caliber pistol in a deal that made her $900.

A month later, she and an accomplice sold close to a quarter-pound of methamphetamine in two drug deals, the ATF said.

She was indicted on one count of conspiracy to engage in the business of dealing in firearms without a license, one count of possession of an unregistered firearm, and two counts of distributing methamphetamine, authorities said.

Romines could not immediately be reached for comment early Tuesday.

The chief of the sex crimes unit at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office resigned on Friday — amid Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial, The Post has learned.

Martha Bashford put in her retirement papers after four decades with the office, DA Cyrus Vance Jr.’s office has confirmed.

The sex crimes unit did not oversee the prosecution of Weinstein after Vance replaced veteran sex crimes prosecutor Maxine Rosenthal in 2018 with Assistant DA Joan Illuzzi-Orbon, who is not part of the unit.

Rosenthal came under fire after she allegedly referred to one of his accusers, who was later excised from the case over credibility issues, as one of “Harvey’s girls,” sources said.

On Bashford’s recommendation, Vance made the controversial call not to prosecute Weinstein in 2015 for allegedly groping Italian model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez even though the disgraced film mogul was captured on an NYPD audio recording apologizing for his conduct.

I couldn’t believe my ears. Thinking that the justice would be on the side of a child but apparently a man who has molested his own offspring has rights to them. Unless I can show up with a defense team to protect my child. I’m desperate to get the help to protect her from him ever hurting her again. We now find ourselves in this situation.

We ar in the midst of one of the most challenging situation no parent should ever face. I am taking my daughters father to court in pursuit of full custody with no visitation .

This decision does not come easily. March 6th my daughter came forward about her father abusing her. This last month has been hell for her. Its been hell for me to even take in that the father of my child is a monster. All I know as a mother who loves my daughter dearly my daughter is no longer safe in her fathers care. She expressed she never wants to see her father again. She is afraid for her life at this point because she spoke out and knows her father will be angry.

Come to find out hes been molesting her for some time now. The first time it happened she ran to tell her grandmother ( bios dads mother) Grandmother immediately called my daughters father to the room to let him know what my daughter just expressed to her. He of course yelled at my daughter and scared her to death. My daughter trusted an adult to protect her and that person failed to do so. Neither adult ever came to me to let me know about that incident. Years later here we are. My brave daughter finally came to me for help.

I started my daughter with an amazing therapist who specializes with sexual abuse victims. These visits have become quite costly for my family and I. We also received horrific news today in court that my daughters predator (Father) wants monitored visits with her. My daughter doesn't ever want to be in his presence. She is afraid he will hurt again. I was able to meet with an attorney today who made me feel we have a chance to help this case and save my child. Our next court hearing is May 3rd. We are at our final hours of being able to retain the attorney to appear on our court date.

We need help with the attorney / therapy fees.

Prayers for my daughter would be much appreciated.

Court will reconvene June 5th. We are still in need of prayers and donations. Judge ruled for in child’s favor for her to have her own counsel. This will help give her a voice in the court. Please share and prayers will be greatly appreciated

Israel Advocates Quiet on U.S. Plans To Arm Syria Rebels

Israel and its supporters in the United States are so far not challenging proposals to send ammunition and even light artillery to some Syrian opposition groups, despite fears that those arms could end up in the hands of fighters committed to global jihad.

An official with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the largest pro-Israel lobby, said the group has not taken a position on proposed legislation calling for the arming of certain opposition groups, or on the broader issue of arming the Syrian opposition.

Meanwhile, in Israel, a government official explained that Jerusalem is focused only on arms capable of changing the regional balance — a concern that leads Israel to worry more about the Syrian government’s arms build-up as it battles to put down the opposition.

The weapons that worry Israel include Russian-made S-300 anti-aircraft systems that could pose a threat to Israeli air superiority. Russia recently agreed to send these weapons to Syria despite Israeli entreaties.

Israel is also determined to block advanced surface-to-surface missiles from being transferred to Hezbollah from Iran via Syria.

“Bullets and mortars,” the Israeli official said, “are for internal fighting” and therefore are not of great concern to Jerusalem.

Recent events on the ground further highlighted Israel’s focus on Syria’s military, not on potential future threats from armed opposition groups. On May 21, forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fired at an Israeli military vehicle patrolling the border in the Golan Heights. Israel responded with gunfire directed at a Syrian army outpost and with a stern warning from its armed forces chief of staff, Benny Gantz, that Assad will “bear the consequences” of any escalation along the border.

Israeli officials, however, have made clear that they will not intervene in the Syrian civil war, including by taking a position regarding American military aid to opposition forces.

That could make the work of Syrian opposition representatives in Washington somewhat easier.

With no end in sight to the carnage in Syria’s civil war, activists from opposition groups are lobbying the administration and Congress to begin arming the rebels with American-made weapons.

The move, they say, could tip the balance in favor of the opposition and hasten Assad’s departure — an outcome Washington publicly supports — without requiring American boots on the ground or an expensive and dangerous air raid campaign.
