Coronavirus to Slow Down Gitmo Detainees’ Legal Cases - Lawyer

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic will slow down the legal processes of detainees at Guantanamo Bay because the measures undertaken to combat the virus will most likely cause scheduled hearings to be postponed, attorney Stephen Truitt, who represents a detainee, said.

The US Navy said on Tuesday that a sailor stationed at the Guantanamo Bay naval station has tested positive for COVID-19.

"So far as I can tell, protective measures have been taken for the entire base in light of the presence of coronavirus at the base. I believe that arrivals at the base must be isolated for 14 days," Truitt said. "Such a measure would help protect guard forces, civilian contractors and prisoners."

Truitt said he expects any isolation requirement to delay meeting with clients if imposed on visiting lawyers.

"It is also likely to slow down hearings scheduled, scheduling new hearings, telephone calls and the like. We shall have to wait and see how the new (as well as any added) requirements work out. It is too soon to tell," Truitt said.

Truitt said the last time he visited the base was in mid-November before COVID-19 had stimulated any reaction in the United States.

"So I have not directly interacted with the local base authorities," Truitt said, noting that he has visited his client at the detention center at Guantanamo bay a total of 18 times since 2005.

Truitt said his client remains detained and is not yet cleared to be released while other detainees from Yemen who were arrested with him were all cleared for release and released, prior to the current Trump administration.

Truitt stressed that his client has never been charged with any crime, much less tried or convicted, and the prosecution has declared that it does not intend to bring charges against him.

Truitt pointed out that his client actively participated in his latest PRB Review proceeding in November 2019 and is now awaiting a decision.

"No further review has yet been set," he said.

Truitt also said that there has never been an allegation that his client - an electrician from the city of Aden - has harmed, or attempted to harm, any American.

The attorney said there is a possibility his client could be transferred to another country because of the ongoing war in Yemen and because he has close family in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Truitt noted that some 40 prisoners remain in the Guantanamo prison, 24 of whom are considered "low value."

Former US President George W. Bush opened the Guantanamo Bay detention center in 2002 amid the Global War on Terror. Since, Guantanamo has housed more than 700 prisoners.

The facility has long been criticized for the mistreatment and abuse of its detainees, prompting many to call on US authorities to close it down. It has housed suspected terrorists from Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and other countries since 2002, many of them without being charged.

Italian Mayor Threatens to Send ‘Police With Flamethrowers’ to Graduation Parties

Italian mayors have started to become extremely hostile in their public addresses, as many citizens are refusing to comply with the social distancing orders that have been put into place.

Vincenzo De Luca, mayor of the Italian town of Campania, gave an angry speech from his Facebook page where he threatened to send police “with flamethrowers” to illegal gatherings like graduations parties that were happening in the midst of the nationwide quarantine.

“I’m getting news that some [people] would like to throw graduation parties… We will send police. With flamethrowers,” De Luca said, according to the National Post.

In another rant published to social media, Massimiliano Presciutti, the mayor of Reggio Calabria, complained of people walking their dogs like Will Smith in I Am Legend.

“Where the f*** are you all going? You and your dogs… which must have an inflamed prostate?” he said in a video circulating on social media.

Presciutti claimed that he stopped dog walkers on the street to shame them about being outside.

“I stopped him and said, ‘Look, this isn’t a movie. You are not Will Smith in I Am Legend. Go home,” he said.

Antonio Tutolo, the mayor of Lucera, was upset that people were going out to get their hair done.

“Getting in mobile hairdressers? What the f is that for? Who the f is supposed to even see you with your hair all done in a casket? Do you understand the casket will be closed?” he said.

The streets are mostly empty throughout the country, but there are still some people who are defying the order for a variety of reasons. Police say that at least 40,000 people were fined for being outside in the first week of the lockdown. Italians who are found to break quarantine while being infected with the virus could face up to 21 years in prison.

Even gatherings like funerals have also been banned. At least 50 people in Sicily are facing serious criminal charges after breaking the quarantine order after having a funeral for a loved one.

Italy has the worst experience with the CoViD-19 virus than any other country thus far, with over 6,000 deaths and 64,000 cases of the illness. However, the number of new cases in the country have started to decline in recent days, giving hope that the worst could be over.

Trump Federalizes National Guard in 3 States to Guard Shipments, Offload Supplies

National Guard troops federalized by President Donald Trump in the three states hit hardest by the coronavirus – New York, California and Washington state – will take no part in enforcing quarantines or shelter-in-place orders, the chief of the National Guard Bureau said Sunday.

Air Force Gen. Joseph Lengyel said the troops could be used for a range of missions, including guarding shipments and offloading of food and supplies, or possibly responding to disturbances under the supervision of local law enforcement. But they would remain under the control of the states’ governors, he said.

He said there was no truth to rumors spreading on the internet that National Guard troops would be used to keep residents in their homes.

In contacts with all of the governors, “none of them have talked about quarantine operations,” Lengyel said.

He stressed that the troops “won’t be given mission sets where they don’t have protective equipment,” but he also echoed the concerns of the governors that masks and other gear were in short supply.

In a late Sunday telephone conference with defense reporters, Lengyel said he did not expect that any of the troops would come into direct contact with patients infected by coronavirus, but “that remains to be seen” as the virus continues to spread exponentially.

Earlier, at a White House news conference, Trump said that he was activating the National Guard for New York, California and Washington state, and similar action was being considered for other states.”

Troops activated under Title 32 would normally be funded 75% by the federal government and 25% by the states, Lengyel said, but under authorities approved by Trump, the 25% cost for the states was being picked up by the federal government.

He did not have any immediate projections for how many National Guard troops would be federalized, but described the activations as no different from when they are called up for hurricanes or other natural disasters.

As of Sunday morning, at least 7,300 National Guard members had been deployed to fight the virus in all 50 states.

Lengyel said another 30,000 National Guard troops currently are deployed to the U.S. Central Command and Indo-Pacific Command regions, but none of those troops would be diverted to states to combat coronavirus.

FBI Agents Kill Domestic Terror Suspect Who Was Planning Mass Casualty Attack Due To COVID-19

BELTON, Mo. — The FBI says one of their agents fatally shot a domestic terror suspect Tuesday in 100th block of Wilbur Parish Circle in Belton.

Officials say the suspect, 36-year-old Timothy Wilson, was angry with the government’s social distancing measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Wilson reportedly planned to bomb a hospital in response.

FBI investigators say Wilson was motivated by racial, religious and anti-government views.

Wilson “decided to accelerate his plan to use a vehicle-born improvised explosive device in an attempt to cause severe harm and mass casualties,” a press release said.

Wilson allegedly decided on an unnamed hospital as a target and began to pursue bomb making materials.

Agents attempted to arrest Wilson when he tried to pick up what he thought was a truck bomb. That’s when the shooting occurred. He was later pronounced dead.

No other civilians or law officers were injured.

SecDef Offers Sparse Details on American Woman Recovered in Secretive Military Op

The U.S. military conducted an operation to bring home an American woman who had been the victim of a violent crime in Honduras, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Monday.

Esper was deliberately vague on the details, but said, "We had a young lady, a young American, who was the victim of a violent crime in Honduras, I believe. She has been returned to the United States."

He did not say when or how the woman was brought out safely from Honduras, which has closed its borders during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

"Out of respect for her and her family, for her privacy, we'll just leave it at that," Esper added at a Pentagon briefing.

He noted that the military last Friday flew home an American women's tackle football team, which had been in Honduras for a competition that was canceled because of the coronavirus threat.

"We were able to get a young woman released from a certain area who was being horribly accosted, horribly treated," the president added.

Trump said that Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley "took care of it. We went in and we got her out, but that was rough stuff." He thanked Milley "and all the people involved and people who went in to get her," but did not say whether the woman had been held hostage.

Following the late Sunday White House news conference, Pentagon officials and Milley's office declined comment and referred questions to the White House.

The return of the woman and the football team underline the plight of thousands of American tourists and students who have been stranded overseas by the closing of borders by the U.S. and other countries hit by the outbreak.

Some of the stranded citizens have posted Facebook pages such as "Americans Stuck in Peru" and "American Citizens Stranded In Guatemala."

On Sunday, the State Department said that two flights had been chartered to bring Americans out of Guatemala and could possibly arrive Monday.

‘Covid-19 could be seasonal’: Fauci warns coronavirus is likely to return in ‘CYCLES’, stresses need for vaccine

Even if the US and other nations battling Covid-19 succeed in beating it back, the illness may return in yearly cycles, warned Anthony Fauci, a top expert on the US coronavirus task force, urging for the fast rollout of a vaccine.

“This could become a seasonal, cyclic thing, and I’ve always indicated to you that I think it very well might,” Dr. Fauci told reporters at the White House on Wednesday. “We're starting to see now in the southern hemisphere and southern Africa … that we’re having cases that are appearing as they go into their winter season.”

If, in fact, they have a substantial outbreak, it will be inevitable that we need to be prepared that we’ll get a cycle around the second time.

Fauci, who also heads up the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and holds some 45 honorary doctoral degrees, emphasized the need to develop a vaccine, test it quickly and try to “get it ready so we’ll have a vaccine available for that next cycle.” A “menu” of various treatments must also be fast tracked through clinical trials, he said.

Dr. Lee Norman, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, also raised the possibility that the virus could be seasonal at a press briefing last Friday, but said it was too soon to tell.

The US has confirmed some 65,000 cases of Covid-19 to date, seeing more than 900 deaths, and is fast becoming one of the world’s hardest-hit countries, surpassed by only Italy and China.

Asked about the World Health Organization’s (WHO) praise for China’s response to the outbreak at Wednesday’s briefing, Fauci became frustrated, telling the reporter “I don’t even know what the question is,” with President Donald Trump cutting in: “Welcome to the group.”

Trump was more willing to weigh in on the question, stating the WHO had “very much sided with China,” and that the organization was “biased” toward the People’s Republic, but nonetheless added “there are a lot of good people there.”

Worldwide, the virus has infected in excess of 466,000 people and killed more than 21,000, with cases now climbing by the tens of thousands each day.

California Pulls $1.3 Billion From Reserves for chinavirus Fight

California said it was withdrawing $1.3 billion from its emergency reserve account to buy supplies and equipment needed to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s finance department said it was transferring the money to the disaster response-emergency operations account. The money will be used to purchase personal protective equipment and critical medical supplies, enhance the surge capacity of hospitals and medical facilities, and procure other items necessary to support the state’s efforts to combat the Covid-19 outbreak.

California is one of the states hardest hit by the pandemic, with more than 2,500 cases reported and 53 deaths. Newsom on March 19 ordered the state’s 40 million residents to go into home isolation in an effort to slow the spread and give hospitals time to prepare.

State lawmakers on March 16 approved a separate $500 million emergency spending package with authority to spend up to $1 billion from the general fund for the effort.

The state has about $21 billion in surplus money put aside.

Brooklyn, NY — As doctors, nurses, and other medical staff bravely battle the coronavirus on the front lines, there are other industries out there who are providing extremely vital services, but get overlooked. In a time in which grocery store shelves are being emptied at furious rates, truck drivers are tirelessly carrying tons of supplies from coast to coast to make sure society does not break down during this crisis. The supplies range from food to medical supplies that are invaluable during these times. One would think that these brave men and women behind the big wheels would be given leeway by law enforcement during this outbreak. However, as the following case illustrates, one would be wrong.

In many places, these truck drivers are actually greeted with kindness and thanked for their service. In Eufaula, Alabama, the police department announced they wanted to help the hungry truck drivers, AL.com reported.

“To that end, if you are a truck driver, and need to take time off the road in Eufaula, we will assist you in getting food,” the Eufaula Police Department posted on their official Facebook page. “With more and more restaurants limiting their dining room access, it is becoming harder for our truck driving friends to find places to eat. We will either go get something for you, or give you a ride to the nearest drive through (if you don’t mind riding in the back seat).”

“We are working non-stop, but it’s to make sure people get what they need,” says Ronda Aucoin, a truck driver from Kentucky.

Aucoin told KRNV that people have been kind of enough to bring her a warm meal when she and her daughter post-up at truck stops across the country.

“Nevadans have been especially nice since a few places are closed and not allowing us to stay the night when we’re done working,” says Aucoin.

But these cases are in Nevada and Alabama. In New York, the same brave men and women hauling crucial supplies during this crisis are being preyed on by police. Instead of bringing them warm food and salutations, officers from the NYPD’s 66th Precinct brought them extortion and theft.

Because many rest stops are closed across the country, Truckers have been forced to stop on the side of the road to sleep while hauling these supplies. Instead of realizing this, NYPD cops raided the sleeping truckers, issued them fines and impounded their vehicles — for sleeping on the side of the road.

Completely oblivious to the heinous nature of preying on people trying to keep the nation from falling into chaos, the officers who conducted the raid took to Twitter to brag about it.

“Our traffic safety officer was out on Bay pkwy towing these illegally parked trailers,” the NYPD 66th Precinct tweeted on Monday morning. “Please remember commercial vehicles cannot be parked on residential blocks.”

US military confirms 1st Covid-19 case INSIDE Pentagon after Marine tests positive

A US Marine has become the first confirmed carrier of the coronavirus within the Pentagon’s walls, with the US military announcing that a serviceman has gone into self-isolation after testing positive this week.

The officer’s test for Covid-19 came back positive earlier this week, Captain Monica Witt, a spokesman for the US Marine Corps, confirmed Wednesday, according to Defense One.

The Marine is believed to have contracted the deadly illness sweeping through all 50 American states from his spouse, who was displaying flu-like symptoms. Assigned to the plans, policy and operations office of the Marine Corps headquarters, the officer last set foot into the Pentagon building on March 13, and has since been in self-isolation awaiting the outcome of his test.

Once he started feeling unwell himself, the Marine “contacted his assigned medical facility,” Witt said, noting that the infected officer’s workplace has been disinfected.

A “thorough” investigation was launched to determine the officer’s recent contacts, as he could have unwittingly exposed others to the virus that has already infected over 66,000 people in the US alone.

While the Marine has become the first known coronavirus case permeating the US Defense Department’s HQ, it might not be the last, since several other staffers have yet to receive their results.

One of those Covid-19 suspects is an employee of the Pentagon’s National Military Command Centre – frequently referred to as the ‘war room’ – from where a nuclear strike can be launched, among other things.

Earlier this week, Defense Secretary Mark Esper further restricted access to the Pentagon building, raising its health protection status to the second highest level. Although the flow of people into the cornerstone of the US defense complex has dwindled, Defense One reported that some 30 percent of its employees still show up to work, citing an internal briefing.

The US military has sounded the alarm over the rapid spread of the virus and its potential to undermine combat readiness. The viral threat has already brought most US overseas operations to a standstill, with Esper ordering all American troops to halt all travel for up to 60 days on Wednesday, except in Afghanistan, where the drawdown of the US contingent continues.

The pandemic also dealt a heavy blow to NATO's ‘Defender Europe 2020’ war games exercise, which was supposed to feature some 20,000 American soldiers, with the bulk of the exercise set for April and May.

While the drill was not called off altogether, US participation was cut “drastically” and the exercise itself – once touted as the biggest transfer of US soldiers to Europe in over 25 years – has been scaled back significantly.

A woman accused Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden of sexual assault in 1993 when she worked for him as a staff assistant.

Tara Reade revealed the graphic details of her accusations in an interview on Wednesday with journalist and podcaster Katie Harper.

Reade said that she was sent to rush a gym bag to Biden, who was a U.S. Senator at the time, when he accosted her in a side area and allegedly sexually assaulted her.

This Physician Is Using Hormones to Treat TBI Patients

While some physicians are shy about using testosterone and other hormones to treat patients with a traumatic brain injury, that hasn't stopped one southern California physician.

Studies have found testosterone hormone therapy can damage patients' brains, but Mark Gordon, Millennium Health Centers founder and medical director, has found a way to carefully increase this and other hormones in his patients.

For example, he has found clomiphene citrate, a drug commonly used for women trying to become pregnant, can increase the production of testosterone in men. If the patient does not respond to this, Gordon said he will use a low dose of testosterone, along with two other hormones that he claims will counteract testosterone's negative effects on the brain.

"This has been a battle I have been fighting for more than 15 years with my esteemed colleagues," Gordon said in an email. "In assessment of testosterone levels in a person with blast trauma, the traditional health care providers tend to do a very limited blood.

Gordon said it’s more than just testosterone. He looks at the patient's levels of neurosteroids, the brain's hormones, and neuroactive steroids, which are produced by the body, and works to get those in balance.

"Using the science of neuroendocrinology, we assess the brain's hormones and those produced by the body as reflections of our brain's health since, after trauma, these can be greatly affected," he said about his Millennium-TBI Biomarker panel in a statement.

The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, which tracks and studies TBI cases in the military, says mild TBI (mTBI) can cause temporary gaps in memory, irritability, depression, anxiety and trouble sleeping. Many physicians currently are treating mTBI in patients through cognitive and physical therapy, but Gordon says he has found success with hormone therapy.

Defense Department Health Affairs officials said March 12 they are not currently aware of Gordon’s work, but added they are researching neuroendocrine dysfunction (NED) in patients.

So far, the DoD recommends clinicians consider a NED diagnosis when symptoms like those Gordon has seen – insomnia, impaired cognition and memory loss, as well as emotional and mood disturbance – persist or appear after three months post-injury.

“Symptoms of NED are similar to the symptoms of other post mTBI medical diagnoses such as sleep disorder, memory difficulties, depression, PTSD and/or post concussive syndrome,” states the DoD NED guidance from 2012. “Considering NED may avoid a delay in diagnosis and improve prognosis.”

Gordon said his treatment regime has had great success, helping veterans, a Guinness World Record surfer and a New York City firefighter.

One patient is Green Beret veteran Andrew Marr, who went on to co-author a book with his brother, "Tales from the Blast Factory: A Brain Injured Special Forces Green Beret's Journey Back From the Brink."

Marr's story, along with a couple of other patients', are told in a newly released documentary called "Quiet Explosions: Healing The Brain." The film's next showing will be in Los Angeles on March 18.

Talked to a friend who works in Pharma. Also my ex is in Pharma.
