As her lawyer quits, Biden accuser Tara Reade’s credibility is challenged by lawyers whose clients she testified against as an expert witness

Several California defense attorneys said Friday that they would attempt to overturn criminal convictions that relied upon testimony from Tara Reade, the former Senate aide who accused Joe Biden of sexually assaulting her in 1993, because she may have provided false information under oath.

 

During testimony in Monterey County court cases in which she was called as an expert on domestic violence, Reade said that she had received a bachelor's degree from Antioch University, had never taken the bar exam after graduating from law school and had been a legislative assistant in Biden’s office. Those claims have since been documented as false or been called into doubt in stories published since she made her accusation against Biden.

 

Roland Soltesz and law partner William V. Pernik said they will seek to overturn the conviction of their client, who they have not yet been able to contact as she serves a life sentence in prison after being convicted of arson in a trial in which Reade testified as a witness.

 

“I am going to subpoena every one of her academic records, so this thing is coming to court one way or another,” Soltesz said.

 

Pernik said he has been contacting appellate attorneys to try to overturn the conviction. “We didn’t look at it from a political angle, we looked at it from the angle of this is scandal that is going to hit our small county,” he said.

 

The review of the cases, which was first reported by the Monterey County Weekly, came as the attorney who had been representing Reade in her claim against Biden said Friday that his firm decided to no longer work with her as a client.

 

Douglas Wigdor had represented several other plaintiffs during the #MeToo era, including victims who said they were harassed by Fox News host Bill O’Reilly and film producer Harvey Weinstein.

 

“Our firm no longer represents Tara Reade,” Wigdor said in a statement Friday morning. He said that the decision was made Wednesday and that it “is by no means a reflection on whether then-Senator Biden sexually assaulted Ms. Reade.”

 

Biden has vehemently denied the claims made by Reade, who worked for him for eight months as a staff assistant in his Senate office.

 

In the statement, Wigdor continued to defend Reade and did not offer an explanation for why his firm decided to stop representing her. Reade did not respond to a request for comment.

 

Wigdor, who has donated to President Trump but said his own political affiliation did not impact the cases he pursued, declined to comment beyond the statement. His firm has been representing her pro bono for two weeks.

 

“We also believe that to a large extent Ms. Reade has been subjected to a double standard in terms of the media coverage she has received,” he said. “Much of what has been written about Ms. Reade is not probative of whether then-Senator Biden sexually assaulted her, but rather is intended to victim-shame and attack her credibility on unrelated and irrelevant matters.

 

“We genuinely wish Ms. Reade well and hope that she, as a survivor, is treated fairly. We have and will continue to represent survivors regardless of their alleged predator’s status or politics.”

 

Reade said she was handing a gym bag to Biden in a corridor near the Senate office in 1993 when he pushed her against a wall and digitally penetrated her. In 2019, she said Biden had sexually harassed her; this spring she publicly leveled the assault accusation for the first time.

 

Her accusations have triggered several in-depth examinations of Biden’s office during that time period, as well as of Reade’s own background. Several stories examined testimony that she has given in recent years, in which she spoke under oath as an expert on domestic violence.

In a recent interview about her courtroom experience with the Monterey County Weekly, she described her work for prosecutors as a type of public service.

 

“It is an important community service for me,” she said. “It’s a way I channel the restorative justice piece, through helping other people. I explain cycles of abuse. I talk about the cycles of violence.”

She was repeatedly used by the district attorney in cases where victims of domestic violence had changed their stories, complicating the prosecution’s case. She would explain to the jury that such recantations were common given the emotional dynamics of dysfunctional relationships, suggesting that the initial stories of violence could still be credible even if the testimony at trial was contradictory.

 

That was the case in the December 2018 trial of two women accused of arson, in which Reade was brought to the stand by the prosecution to explain why a witness to the alleged events had changed his story from saying he had seen two women running from the scene to saying he had witnessed two men, according to Soltesz, the attorney for one of the women.

 

“She came in and did this whole song and dance about how he was a victim of domestic violence as well and why he would change his story,” Soltesz recalled. “He testified in court that it wasn’t these girls.”

 

Scott Erdbacher, the attorney for the second convicted defendant in the case, said he remembers Reade’s testimony as a pivotal part of the prosecution because she helped to explain why the primary witness to the crime had changed his story. The jury appeared to find his first version more persuasive when it convicted the women.

 

“I’m always concerned when an expert witness testifies falsely, and we are looking into filing a petition for habeas corpus,” Erdbacher said, describing a type of appeal that would challenge his client’s imprisonment.

 

Attempts to reach Monterey County prosecutors Friday were not successful.

He was told ofthe calls by Colonel Brooks to NEADS from the Air National Guard Command Post but was unaware ofthem.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for an investigation into the leaked audio recordings between Joe Biden and former Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko.

 

At a press conference in Kiev, Zelensky said the conversations between the two leaders “might be perceived, qualified as high treason,” the Washington Post reported.

 

“As to Poroshenko and Biden, yes, I have heard, I will comment,” Zelensky said on Wednesday. “I think it’s not the last sign that Ukrainians will see. The prosecutors, law enforcement bodies should react. The prosecutor general of Ukraine registered criminal proceedings at the request of deputy [Andriy] Derkach yesterday. They will investigate.”

 

Recordings of portions of private calls between the then-vice president and Poroshenko were released this week in which Biden discusses exchanging $1 billion in aid to Ukraine once its prosecutor general, Viktor Shokin, is replaced.

 

Critics claim the calls show a quid pro quo — though Biden has publicly discussed the arrangement in the past.

 

The tapes were released Monday by Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Derkach, a former member of the pro-Russia Party of Regions who claims he received them from “investigative journalists.”

Black Entertainment Television (BET) co-founder Robert Johnson condemned former Vice President Joe Biden following comments from the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Friday claiming that if black voters are still undecided, then they aren’t black.

“If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black,” Biden said on “The Breakfast Club” podcast.

 

“VP Biden’s statement today represents the arrogant and out-of-touch attitude of a paternalistic white candidate who has the audacity to tell Black people, the descendants of slaves, that they are not Black unless they vote for him,” Johnson said in a statement to Fox News. “This proves unequivocally that the Democratic nominee believes that Black people owe him their vote without question; even though, we as Black people know it is exactly the opposite. He should spend the rest of his campaign apologizing to every Black person he meets.”

 

BET is the largest cable network dedicated to a black audience.

 

Biden’s remarks also drew swift condemnation from conservatives shaming the comments as offensive.

 

South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott chastised Biden’s words as “the most arrogant, outrageous comment that I’ve heard in a very long time,” but also said he was unsurprised, given Biden’s hand in crafting the 1994 crime bill as a Delaware senator leading the Judiciary Committee.

 

Biden, Scott said, sponsored the legislation that “jailed more African-American males than any other legislation.”

 

“And President Trump comes along, and through his criminal justice reform, corrects the absolute mistakes made by Joe Biden; 1.3 million African-Americans voted for Trump. He’s saying to 1.3 million African-Americans that you are not black? Who in the heck does he think he is?”

 

Former Utah Republican Congresswoman Mia Love, who now works as a CNN political commentator, also issued a sharp rebuke over Biden’s comments, labeling them as “racist.”

 

“It’s incredibly offensive to hear this kind of rhetoric from anyone, let alone the presumptive nominee of the Democrat party,” Love wrote on Twitter. “Joe Biden’s comments were racist and an affront to the millions of African Americans who voted Republican in 2016.

FBI Director Orders Internal Review of Investigation Into Ex-Trump Adviser Flynn

 

Christopher Wray, director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, has called for an after-action review of the agency’s investigation into former Trump administration national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Michelle Obama tried to register to run for President in 2020 with the Secretary of State’s office this morning, the first step on a long to-do list to get a person on the ballot.

 

Once certified as a potential candidate, the process of gathering signatures and getting on the ballots in the individual states begins. The State Department’s only job is to make sure that the candidate meets the three constitutional requirements to be president.

 

The first she meets easily. She is over thirty-five-years-old. The second she also meets having been born in the United Sates.

The third requirement, one few people think about, is where she came up short. You must be a resident “within the united states” for 14 years before you’re eligible. Why she doesn’t qualify is partly how she was raised but mostly of her own doing.

 

As a child, Michelle Obama’s legal residence was in the British Virgin Islands. Her parents kept it that way so she would be eligible for immigrant status and special consideration for schooling.

 

Between birth and age 22, when she graduated college, Michelle Obama had only racked up two years of legal, US residency.

 

After college, in order to avoid paying taxes, she kept an address in the Cayman Islands from which she filed all of her tax returns. Therefore, none of the years between the time she graduated and the time she became First Lady count either.

 

While in the White House, the Obamas filed joint returns, giving her another seven years of residency. At nine years of residency, she is ineligible to be president.

 

She will qualify in 2021, meaning she will miss the next cycle and we won’t have to watch her campaign for the next four years.

That’s 20 that were discovered. How many more are out there? Could that be just an accident? A mix-up in the mail or delivery service? I don’t see that being possible. I wouldn’t think that the ballots are delivered in lots of 20.

 

Officials say this isn’t the first absentee ballot issue they’ve had. Previous to this instance, some voters received the wrong absentee ballots in Greenville County when the Democratic presidential primary and the special election for sheriff were held. Also:

Democratic primary because election officials realized they could not account for dozens of ballots. In March 2020, Richland County again realized it was short dozens of absentee ballots.

'That was not what the vice president said': Sheila Jackson Lee denies Biden meant 'you ain't black' comment

 

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee threw her support behind former Vice President Joe Biden after he said black people who don't vote for him aren't actually black.

During an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, the Texas Democrat pushed back on the claim that Biden made a major gaffe when he told The Breakfast Club host Charlamagne Tha God on Friday morning that "if you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black."

"That was not what the vice president said in terms of those words, and if we had listened to the earlier conversation, we would know that the vice president wants to put his record forward. He knows that everyone has their own historical, moral standing on the color of their skin," Lee said. "He also believes in the history of our people, and I don't believe, in any way, that he undermined who we are and what we are."

 

Lee said it was a smart move for Biden to appear on the morning show despite his controversial comments.

"I am delighted that the vice president was on The Breakfast Club," Lee said. "It is a dynamic show with a very probative, questioning host. That was the right thing to do. Then, as well, I think the right thing to do was to own up that it might not have been as funny as we might have thought originally, meaning the vice president, because it was done in jest."

 

When Baier read a critical response from BET founder Robert Johnson that accused Biden of arrogance, Lee said that Biden's record on predominately black issues has been transparent.

"I believe he's answered, over the last 24 hours, that he's going to fight every single day to earn the vote of every single African American of all generations, and that's the way a presidential candidate should put their candidacy forward," Lee said.

 

Lee then pivoted to President Trump, criticizing him for what she alleged to be demeaning comments about the black community.

"What I like about the vice president is I don't have to look for his record, his record is present," Lee said. "This is a great opportunity for the vice president to show his record and to contrast it with an individual, his opponent, that has called African countries 's-hole countries,' that have not hired African Americans, and finally, I would say, that has made it a point of targeting with raw words, African American women."

Lee wore a face mask at the beginning of the interview to reinforce the importance of wearing a mask even though she was sitting comfortably at home.

Baltimore Mayor Jack Young (D) is once again demanding President Donald Trump scrap his planned visit to the city on Memorial Day, arguing that he believes the trip is against the law, citing the city’s stay-at-home order still being in place due to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.

Dr. Knut M. Wittkowski, former head of biostatistics, epidemiology, and research design at Rockefeller University, says YouTube removed a video of him talking about the virus that had racked up more than 1.3 million views.

 

Wittkowski, 65, is a ferocious critic of the nation’s current steps to fight the coronavirus. He has derided social distancing, saying it only prolongs the virus’ existence and has attacked the current lockdown as mostly unnecessary.

 

Wittkowski, who holds two doctorates in computer science and medical biometry, believes the coronavirus should be allowed to create “herd immunity,” and that short of a vaccine, the pandemic will only end after it has sufficiently spread through the population.

 

“With all respiratory diseases, the only thing that stops the disease is herd immunity. About 80% of the people need to have had contact with the virus, and the majority of them won’t even have recognized that they were infected,” he says in the now-deleted video. –New York Post

In 1953, Joseph Alsop, then one of America’s leading syndicated columnists, went to the Philippines to cover an election. He did not go because he was asked to do so by his syndicate. He did not go because he was asked to do so by the newspapers that printed his column. He went at the request of the CIA.

 

Alsop is one of more than 400 American journalists who in the past twenty‑five years have secretly carried out assignments for the Central Intelligence Agency, according to documents on file at CIA headquarters. Some of these journalists’ relationships with the Agency were tacit; some were explicit. There was cooperation, accommodation and overlap. Journalists provided a full range of clandestine services—from simple intelligence gathering to serving as go‑betweens with spies in Communist countries. Reporters shared their notebooks with the CIA. Editors shared their staffs. Some of the journalists were Pulitzer Prize winners, distinguished reporters who considered themselves ambassadors without‑portfolio for their country. Most were less exalted: foreign correspondents who found that their association with the Agency helped their work; stringers and freelancers who were as interested in the derring‑do of the spy business as in filing articles; and, the smallest category, full‑time CIA employees masquerading as journalists abroad. In many instances, CIA documents show, journalists were engaged to perform tasks for the CIA with the consent of the managements of America’s leading news organizations.

In his rich, sonorous voice, Thomas, the second black American to serve on the Court and, at 28 years, the longest-serving Justice, tells his life story beginning with his birth in tiny Pin Point, Georgia in 1948. Descended from West African slaves and born into rock-bottom poverty, Thomas later was raised by his grandparents in Savannah. His stern grandfather, “the greatest man I have ever known,” believed firmly in hard work and even more firmly in the education he never had, the lack of which he blamed for his inability to rise above his station in life. He impressed upon his grandchildren the importance of committing themselves to school. He told Thomas and his brother that they would attend class every day, even when sick, and even if they were dead he would take their bodies to school for three more days “to make sure we weren’t faking.”

 

Educated by supportive Catholic nuns and feeling a calling to the priesthood, Thomas entered the seminary and excelled academically but ultimately dropped out after a fellow seminarian’s hateful response to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. confirmed for Thomas that the church was not doing enough to combat racism. Abandoning the seminary was unacceptable to his grandfather, who told Thomas in no uncertain terms that he was on his own now. Thomas goes on in the documentary to describe how the subsequent assassination of Robert Kennedy, combined with the blows from MLK’s murder and his grandfather’s rejection, pushed him into an angry downward spiral that led to his involvement with black radical activists (interestingly, Thomas’ brother, who had served in the Vietnam War, felt that Thomas and his fellow radicals should leave the country if they hated it so much). The rest of Clarence’s story is just as compelling: his rejection of radicalism, his graduation from Yale Law School, his ultimate drift toward support for Ronald Reagan (thus becoming a target for Democrats and their “Uncle Tom” smears), his grandfather’s death, his appointment as a Circuit Court judge under President GWH Bush, and then, of course, his nomination as a Supreme Court Justice and the relentless attacks that followed – even before Anita Hill’s allegation of sexual harassment ignited a firestorm. By refusing to conform to Democrat expectations, he was the wrong kind of black man and therefore had to be destroyed, as Thomas says in the documentary.

Rep Ilhan Omar's (D., Minn.) new memoir, This Is What America Looks Like: My Journey From Refugee to Congresswoman is out next week. Among the questions it leaves unanswered is whether Omar complied with House rules governing the big advance she reportedly received on the book.

 

House rules prohibit "the receipt of any advance payment on copyright royalties" unless the contract has been approved by the House Ethics Committee, as the Washington Free Beacon reported in December. At the time, neither Omar nor her publisher responded to repeated requests for comment about when, exactly, Omar signed her book contract and received the advance, which Forbes put at between $100,000 and $250,000.

 

Omar may have received the royalty payment before she was sworn in on Jan. 3, 2019, but her 2018 financial disclosure listed no book advance. We would like to see her 2019 disclosure, but Omar has filed for a 90-day extension.

 

Ninety days takes Omar just past the contested Democratic-Farmer-Labor primary that she faces back home in Minnesota this August—by two days, to be exact. We'll have to check back then.

 

In the meantime, we will wait, almost certainly in vain, for the armies of investigative reporters attuned to the release of Republican financial disclosures to find the time and care to ask these straightforward questions. It's not hard to predict how the congresswoman would respond given that accusations of bigotry have become her standard defense against what most might call public accountability.

 

Take the minor scrutiny her infamously mixed-up marriages have received from the news media. When the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board released a report on its year-long investigation of Omar last June, it revealed tax returns illegally filed with her husband, to whom she was not legally married, while she was legally married to another man.

 

The board's findings, which covered Omar's 2016 race for a state legislative seat, also included several penny-ante campaign finance infractions representative of the congresswoman's carefree approach to American laws.

 

When her hometown paper made inquiries about her marital arrangements and asked to speak to her husband and other relatives, her spokesman called the questions "conspiracy theories," accusing the paper of insinuating that Omar "is somehow illegitimate or not fully American." In fact, her flack continued, Omar had "shared more than most public officials ever do about the details of her personal life."

 

That sort of gaslighting has become a standard response when Omar faces scrutiny. Most recently, the congresswoman disputed on-the-record accusations—from a local Imam—that she was improperly routing contributions for a local charity meals program to her campaign account. That one was a "‘scary, lying immigrant' smear."

 

Omar's approach to public relations has served her well, but her approach to accounting has already led to one rebuke from regulators. Surely her constituents deserve to know—before they vote—if she's done it again.

"Q is the information, and I stand with the information source," Perkins told ABC News.

 

Qanon is a set of conspiracy theories that allege Trump is fighting against a deep-state group of bad actors in the intelligence community who are attempting to torpedo Trump's agenda.

 

"Am I bummed I took it down?” asked Perkins. “Yeah, I am really bummed. But I also hired a consultant whose job it is to ‘protect me.’”

 

The movement takes its cue from a mysterious person (or people) named Q who leaves virtual breadcrumbs for followers to investigate. The group generally views Trump and former president John F. Kennedy as the two modern U.S. presidents who have attempted to fight back against members of the FBI and CIA, organizations Qanon alleges are corrupt.

 

Trump has shared Qanon-centric posts and followers on his Twitter page, which has led to a rise in attention for the group, which some allege is a dangerous army of internet trolls.

 

But Perkins has dismissed those concerns and said that her "calculated" risk to reach out to Q supporters is "either pure genius or pure insanity."
