Leaked Facebook Papers reveal social media giant targeted children as young as SIX-years-old to generate bigger profits

The leaked Facebook Papers revealed the social media giant was working to target children as young as 6 years old to expand its consumer base and generate greater profits for the tech titan.

An internal blog post published on April 9 announced that the company was in the process of hiring employees to re-envision its full range of products for kids ages 6-9 and tweens ages 10-12. The company currently already targets children starting at 13 years old.

The post, titled 'The internet wasn't built with young people in mind, but we're about to change that,' was among documents released by whistleblower Frances Haugen's legal team and provided to Congress and the Securities and Exchange Commission that has become known as the Facebook Papers.

'Our company is making a major investment in youth and has spun up a cross-company virtual team to make safer, more private, experiences for youth that improve their and their household's well-being,' the blog post read, according to NBC News.

'For many of our products, we historically haven't designed for under 13.'

The company changed its corporate name to Meta on Thursday as it attempts to rebrand itself after the Facebook Papers highlighted other troubling accusations against the social media titan, including incentives to promote hate and misinformation, a list of high-profile people who can skirt censorship, and even human trafficking.

The leaked post discusses the five different groups Facebook plans to establish: kids 6 to 9 years old, tweens 10 to 12 years old, early teens from 13 to 15 years old, late teens from 16 to 17 years old, and adults 18 and above.

'These five age groups can be used to define education, transparency, controls and defaults that will meet the needs of young users,' the post states. It then goes on to cite the Age Appropriate Design Code (AADC)- a new statutory code that will apply to the company's products in Europe.

In the post, Facebook stated that they had kickstarted the project with several researched but were looking to hire people who had a background in 'global research among youth (particularly kids, tweens, and their caregivers)' and 'partnering with external parties (e.g. academic, policymakers, regulators, child advocates).

Open positions are listed for Privacy Research, Instagram Child Safety and Family Center, MK Youth Research, Instagram Youth Research, Instagram Youth Overall, Instagram Child Safety, and Messenger Kids/Youth Platform- Messenger Kids is a video calling and messaging app created by Facebook that is currently available in app stores. Special inspector general for Afghanistan warns the Pentagon is classifying documents to cover up failures and demands secret reports on how country collapsed are published now

A U.S. government watchdog on Friday accused the State Department and Pentagon of suppressing information that lawmakers and the public need to understand the collapse of Afghanistan's former government and military and the chaotic U.S. troop pullout.

John Sopko, the special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction (SIGAR), spoke out on Friday after it emerged that many of the routine documents had now been marked as classified.

'The full picture of what happened in August - and all the warning signs that could have predicted the outcome - will only be revealed if the information that the departments of Defense and State have already restricted from public release is made available,' said Sopko.

He published on Friday his latest report into the spending in Afghanistan, as requested by Congress who asked for an explanation of what went wrong.

Sopko said that it was time for transparency since the government of President Ashraf Ghani had collapsed.

'There is a lot of information that was classified or withheld from the American people over the years, particularly since 2015, to protect the Afghan government from embarrassment,' Sopko told NPR.

'And there is no Ghani government. There is no Afghan government anymore. So we think that information should be immediately released to SIGAR and to the American people and Congress in an unclassified format.'

Asked what the information he wanted publishing was, he replied: 'It was, how good was the Afghan government fighting corruption?

'How good was the Afghan military able to stand on their own? - casualty rates for the Afghan military, efficiency rates, their ability to actually function as an independent military.

'That was information that the Ghani government requested the U.S. government not share with the American people. There's no reason to protect it any more.'

A State Department spokesperson said the department had requested 'some reports be temporarily removed to redact identifying information from public records and protect the identities of Afghans and Afghan partner organizations' due to security concerns about the evacuation effort.'

The spokesperson continued: 'The identifying information are the only details intended to be shielded.'

They added that SIGAR has the authority to restore the reports.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

‘I Was Raped By The CIA Medics,’ Says Black-Site Survivor

In his first-ever statement, Majid Khan detailed the vengeful reality of the post-9/11 CIA: “The more I cooperated and told them, the more I was tortured.”

IN ONE OF THE MOST HORRIFIC accounts in the entire 20-year War on Terror, a survivor of the CIA’s black sites testified at Guantanamo Bay on Thursday that his CIA captors repeatedly sexually assaulted him—sometimes as revenge for his hunger strikes.

“I was raped by the CIA medics,” Majid Khan said in an address before the Guantanamo military commission on Thursday. It was his first statement to the outside world in 18 years of captivity and abuse in Afghanistan and Guantanamo.

Khan, now 41, spent his first 16 years in Pakistan before his family moved to Maryland. He attended Owings Mills High School outside of Baltimore. He acknowledged on Thursday that his trajectory from “normal U.S. teenager” to al-Qaeda adherent to CIA and military prisoner “must be tough to comprehend.” Left unsaid was how often throughout U.S. history Americans, to say nothing of foreigners, have experienced brutality at the hands of a state that sees them as nonpersons.

He recounted asking one of the CIA medics at an Afghanistan black site in September 2003 why the medic administered what Khan called “the insertions.” Khan said the medic responded, “You’re a fucking terrorist.”

Yet the CIA’s treatment of Khan suggests that the agency did not believe Khan mattered in the world of terrorism, or even possessed much intelligence to extract. By late August 2003, he had been tortured so brutally that he signed a confession—“I don’t remember what I wrote, but I did whatever they asked,” he said—an extension of a willingness to cooperate he said he tried to establish on his first day in captivity.

Even though he had given his captors the confession they wanted, Khan said he was mostly left to rot in his cell for the seven months that followed. His interrogators showed no interest in him. Those particular seven months were a hell of a time for people allegedly out to thwart terrorist plots to show such neglect. They bracket a wave of al Qaeda violence from bombing the United Nations out of Baghdad up to the First Battle of Fallujah. “I was so starved for attention,” Khan recalled.

Khan is unique amongst Guantanamo detainees and black-site survivors. He was moved to Guantanamo Bay in 2006; in February 2012, he pleaded guilty to couriering money for al-Qaeda, and agreed to testify in military tribunals against several of the few detainees charged with crimes, including Khalid Shaikh Mohammad. The lieutenant colonels, colonels, commanders, and Navy captains of the commission are expected to sentence him to 25 to 40 years. But his cooperation, in both criminal and military prosecutions, is expected to result in Khan’s release from Guantanamo in February 2022. He has been in one cage or another since March 5, 2003.

“He has lived up to his obligation to provide U.S. authorities with credible and complete information for a decade,” said Katya Jestin, one of Khan’s longtime pro bono attorneys.

New discovery shows human cells can write RNA sequences into DNA

Cells contain machinery that duplicates DNA into a new set that goes into a newly formed cell. That same class of machines, called polymerases, also build RNA messages, which are like notes copied from the central DNA repository of recipes, so they can be read more efficiently into proteins. But polymerases were thought to only work in one direction DNA into DNA or RNA. This prevents RNA messages from being rewritten back into the master recipe book of genomic DNA. Now, Thomas Jefferson University researchers provide the first evidence that RNA segments can be written back into DNA, which potentially challenges the central dogma in biology and could have wide implications affecting many fields of biology.

"This work opens the door to many other studies that will help us understand the significance of having a mechanism for converting RNA messages into DNA in our own cells," says Richard Pomerantz, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Thomas Jefferson University. "The reality that a human polymerase can do this with high efficiency, raises many questions." For example, this finding suggests that RNA messages can be used as templates for repairing or re-writing genomic DNA.

The work was published June 11th in the journal Science Advances.

Together with first author Gurushankar Chandramouly and other collaborators, Dr. Pomerantz's team started by investigating one very unusual polymerase, called polymerase theta. Of the 14 DNA polymerases in mammalian cells, only three do the bulk of the work of duplicating the entire genome to prepare for cell division. The remaining 11 are mostly involved in detecting and making repairs when there's a break or error in the DNA strands. Polymerase theta repairs DNA, but is very error-prone and makes many errors or mutations. The researchers therefore noticed that some of polymerase theta's "bad" qualities were ones it shared with another cellular machine, albeit one more common in viruses—the reverse transcriptase. Like Pol theta, HIV reverse transcriptase acts as a DNA polymerase, but can also bind RNA and read RNA back into a DNA strand.

In a series of elegant experiments, the researchers tested polymerase theta against the reverse transcriptase from HIV, which is one of the best studied of its kind. They showed that polymerase theta was capable of converting RNA messages into DNA, which it did as well as HIV reverse transcriptase, and that it actually did a better job than when duplicating DNA to DNA. Polymerase theta was more efficient and introduced fewer errors when using an RNA template to write new DNA messages, than when duplicating DNA into DNA, suggesting that this function could be its primary purpose in the cell.

The group collaborated with Dr. Xiaojiang S. Chen's lab at USC and used X-ray crystallography to define the structure and found that this molecule was able to change shape in order to accommodate the more bulky RNA molecule—a feat unique among polymerases.

"Our research suggests that polymerase theta's main function is to act as a reverse transcriptase," says Dr. Pomerantz. "In healthy cells, the purpose of this molecule may be toward RNA-mediated DNA repair. In unhealthy cells, such as cancer cells, polymerase theta is highly expressed and promotes cancer cell growth and drug resistance. It will be exciting to further understand how polymerase theta's activity on RNA contributes to DNA repair and cancer-cell proliferation."

Researchers are formulating unconventional solutions for tree diseases that harm beloved foods like oranges and chocolate. These include a potential RNA therapy, similar to certain COVID-19 vaccines…

Anne Elizabeth Simon, a virologist at the University of Maryland, is attempting to create what she calls a "vaccine" for crops that could protect our food supply.

Like the current approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers have long dealt with pathogen spread among plants by quarantining infected flora to spare surrounding ones. And, depending on the type of disease, plants may also receive pesticides or antibiotic sprays. But to offer more reliable protection, Simon is part of a team developing a vaccine-like solution as an efficient and relatively quickly deployable solution to preempt — or possibly cure — plant diseases.

This potential fix can’t come fast enough…

Most of these diseases don’t have a simple treatment, and require several costly, time-consuming strategies to mitigate the diseases once they've spread. They can also be difficult to detect because, in some cases, several years pass before symptoms appear. Of course, plant pandemics are no new challenge. In the first half of the 20th century, for instance, a disease caused by fungus killed more than 3 billion American chestnut trees. But overall, climate change, ramped-up global travel and neglect by governments and industry have combined to create a perfect pathogen storm that endangers our food supply. “The time has come to let people know that there are other pandemics going on,” Simon says. “There’s multiple ones happening with trees, and it’s going to lead to a very different world.” The readily available tools can’t always curb encroaching pathogens, as proven by Florida’s quickly spiraling citrus industry — though some claim that regulators and growers worsened conditions by not acting quickly enough.

Citrus trees have already grappled with multiple pathogens over the last few centuries, including the 1800s root rot epidemic and the citrus tristeza virus that cropped up in the 1930s. Most devastating of them all, huanglongbing (HLB) — also commonly called citrus greening — originated in China and has wreaked major havoc over the past two decades.

Where Tree “Vaccines” Come In

Simon joined the fight against plant pathogens by chance: While studying plant RNA viruses in her lab, she happened upon a surprising sample in a genetic sequence database that contradicted her 30 years of research. It turned out to be a new type of virus-like RNA that she named iRNA. It shocked Simon because iRNA lacks certain genes found in all normal plant viruses, yet can still move between cells in a plant’s veins by attaching to plant-generated movement proteins.By tweaking the iRNA to carry tiny fragments of a virus, it can provoke plant enzymes to chop up the harmful virus into little pieces, without causing damage to the plant. “This can be a vehicle, not just for one type of tree, but for many,” Simon says. “It’s all because of this very unusual, never-before-seen property.” The iRNA sample was first discovered by University of California, Riverside researchers in the 1950s when it appeared in limequat trees. They found that the iRNA can infect many citrus species with very mild to zero symptoms. Yet its disease-eradicating properties were only recently discovered when Simon identified the missing genes that allow it to move through plant veins.

“This could become one of the important tools in the belt of the industry and farmers to keep citrus going,” says Georgios Vidalakis, a plant pathologist at the University of California, Riverside, and director of the Citrus Clonal Protection Program. “It looks very promising. Still, there is a lot of work to be done."

Eager to get the ball rolling, Simon founded a company called Silvec Biologics in 2019 and is working to develop a single-step vaccinelike preventative treatment that tricks trees into eradicating not only viruses that cause disease, but also fungi and bacteria — somewhat similar to how mRNA jabs force our immune systems to cook up COVID-19 antibodies. Because the trees containing the original iRNA sample have remained alive for more than 70 years, Simon says it suggests that the vaccine could possibly offer lifetime protection against several pathogens when put into newly planted trees — similar to giving children a standard set of shots. What’s less clear, however, is whether highly degraded trees that have been infected for several years can still benefit from the treatment.

Simon hopes that the iRNA therapy can save infected trees that don’t yet show symptoms of disease.

Blackout-causing 'super' solar storms happen more often than we thought

Powerful solar storms pose a great danger to our technologies here on Earth, and space weather scientists just determined that we see these storms far more often than we thought, possibly up to once every 25 years.

In September of 1859, while observering sunspots with his telescope, astronomer Richard Carrington witnessed what is still considered to be the most powerful solar flare ever seen. Just days later, the event was followed by intense auroral displays that were visible all the way to the equator. Long distance telegraph lines became so charged with electricity that operators suffered shocks, and for days after they could even send messages without hooking the system up to a power source. In the aftermath, Carrington linked the events, effectively discovering 'space weather' for the very first time.

Decades later, in July of 2012, satellites observing the Sun spotted an immense cloud of plasma - a coronal mass ejection - erupting into space. Detailed computer modelling revealed that if this rapidly expanding cloud had erupted just two weeks earlier, it would have scored a direct hit on Earth, causing another "Carrington-level" solar storm. Lloyds of London performed a study that showed, based on the impacts of the Carrington Event, if Earth had taken a direct hit from the 2012 solar storm, it would have caused world-wide blackouts and satellite failures, with a pricetag to the global economy totalling in the trillions of dollars.

Even now, nearly eight years after the event, it is possible some parts of the world would have still been trying to recover.

These two events are excellent examples of just how dangerous space weather can be, and a new study performed by scientists with the University of Warwick and the British Antarctic Survey now shows that solar storms severe enough to impact our technologies can occur as often as once every 25 years.

"Our research shows that a super-storm can happen more often than we thought," Richard Horne, a space weather researcher at the British Antarctic Survey who co-authored the paper, said in an American Geophysical Union blog post. "Don't be misled by the stats. It can happen any time. We simply don't know when, and right now we can’t predict when."

Most American Parents Unaware China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar are Major Donors to US Universities

A majority of American parents are unaware that China, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are among the top financiers of U.S. universities and are worried that foreign cash is influencing what their children are taught in the classroom, according to a recent poll.

Nearly 60 percent of those interviewed in the September poll said they were not aware that the countries are major donors to U.S. universities. The poll was commissioned by the Lawfare Project, a nonprofit advocacy group that tracks campus issues.

Qatar’s presence in the U.S. academic system was concerning to parents when they learned about the small Gulf nation’s deep ties to Iran and terrorist organizations such as Hamas and the Taliban. Eighty-four percent of those surveyed said American schools should publicly disclose their ties to Qatar and explain how the money could be coloring the in-class agenda, according to the poll, which surveyed 2,009 adults last month and was provided exclusively to the Washington Free Beacon.

While extensive foreign funding of American universities has raised alarms in Congress and among advocacy groups such as the Lawfare Project, ordinary American parents are not aware of the issue. This is partly because American schools do not publicly disclose their funding and in many cases try to hide their ties to adversarial nations like China. Foreign countries see the U.S. academic system as central to their propaganda efforts, including anti-Israel initiatives. In the case of countries such as China, they seek to steal cutting-edge research. More than 80 percent of those surveyed said Congress should enact legislation requiring schools to publicly account for every foreign donation.

Around 70 percent of those surveyed said they were concerned that foreign donations influence teaching and research priorities. In Qatar’s case, the country has spent billions running propaganda efforts in at least 28 American universities, generating concerns these donations run afoul of U.S. law. With anti-Semitism and anti-Israel attitudes increasing on many American campuses, foreign money has helped foment these movements, including at the University of North Carolina and Duke University—both of which have been embroiled in a long-running controversy over Qatar’s funding of programs critics see as anti-Semitic.

"The public wants full transparency on what Qatar is funding in American schools, and Congress must demand it," Brooke Goldstein, the Lawfare Project’s executive director, told the Free Beacon. "Parents have a right to know what foreign governments are teaching our children."

China’s funding for American universities remains the top concern for parents, with 70 percent expressing worry about Beijing’s presence at U.S. schools. Around 65 percent expressed similar concerns about Saudi Arabia, followed closely by Qatar with 57 percent of those surveyed.

More broadly, there was a 50-50 split between those who support foreign funding of schools and those who oppose it altogether.

McDonald’s to deploy automated drive-throughs in partnership with IBM

Process will use voice-recognition software to streamline ordering process

Fast-food giant McDonald’s is preparing to move forward with an expanded automated drive-through ordering system in a partnership with IBM, a technology the company says is already showing promising results.

McDonald’s announced earlier this year that it was debuting automated drive-up services in the Chicago area. CEO Chris Kempczinski said the system could fulfill orders with up to 85 percent accuracy.

This week the company announced in an earnings call that it had entered into a partnership with IBM in order to accelerate the development of that system.

IBM “is the ideal partner for McDonald’s given their expertise in building AI-powered customer care solutions and voice recognition,” Kempczinski told callers.

The computer company as part of the deal will acquire McDonald’s McD Tech Labs. The company has not revealed financial terms for the deal, though CFO Kevin Ozan said during the call that the deal “isn’t a big financial statement impact, plus or minus.”

Health Ministry sets up 24/7 hotline as threats against doctors rise

The Health Ministry announced that Head of Public Health Services Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis had been assigned a bodyguard, following serious threats on her life by anti-vaxxers.

The Health Ministry has established a 24/7 hotline where employees can report cases of defamation and intimidation, following a series of violent threats against senior officials and others, including Head of Public Health Services Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis.

“The Health Ministry is working in close cooperation with the Israel Police,” it said in a statement Saturday night, “and all the threats reported against the ministry’s employees as a whole are being examined and treated in accordance with the assessments of the situations.”

The hotline, which is operating under the Health Ministry’s National Security Department, was set up earlier in the month and employees of the health system were informed of it on October 19 via a letter from Health Ministry Director-General Prof. Nachman Ash, which was released to the public Saturday night.

The Health Ministry also announced that Alroy-Preis had been assigned a bodyguard, following serious threats on her life by anti-vaxxers.

Last week, her husband, Dr. Meir Preis, took to Twitter to express his fear over the situation, tagging the police and Public Security Minister Omer Bar Lev.

“There are concrete threats to the life of my wife,” he wrote. “You know that, there are messages on social networks, there are phone numbers, there are explicitly threatening calls. You have the materials. It is time to act, now before it’s too late!”

The Health Ministry said that in addition to the bodyguard, the Preis home had been equipped with a distress button and reinforced by other security activities for months.

“We have recently witnessed extreme statements toward healthcare workers,” Ash wrote in his letter, “coming from opponents of the actions being taken by the state to eradicate the coronavirus, most prominently from vaccine opponents.”

He said there have been clashes on social networks, including personal attacks characterized by blatant criticism and abusive images.

Ash said that sometimes the criticism crosses the threshold of “legitimate discussion and may impair the resilience of the system’s workers.”

Alroy-Preis has been the target of insults for months. According to reports in Israeli media, the threats against her had already been considered at level four out of six, hence the reason for the police patrols and other efforts.

On May 1, 2019, the star next door erupted.

In a matter of seconds, Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to our Sun, got thousands of times brighter than usual — up to 14,000 times brighter in the ultraviolet range of the spectrum. The radiation burst was strong enough to split any water molecules that might exist on the temperate, Earth-sized planet orbiting that star; repeated blasts of that magnitude might have stripped the planet of any atmosphere.

It would be bad news if the Earth’s sun ever got so angry.

But the Sun does have its moments — most famously, in the predawn hours of Sep. 2, 1859. At that time, a brilliant aurora lit up the planet, appearing as far south as Havana. Folks in Missouri could read by its light, while miners sleeping outdoors in the Rocky Mountains woke up and, thinking it was dawn, started making breakfast. “The whole of the northern hemisphere was as light as though the Sun had set an hour before,” the Times of London reported a few days later.

Meanwhile, telegraph networks went haywire. Sparks flew from equipment — some of which caught on fire — and operators in Boston and Portland, Maine, yanked telegraph cables from batteries but kept transmitting, powered by the electrical energy surging through the Earth.

The events of that Friday evoked biblical descriptions. “The hands of angels shifted the glorious scenery of the heavens,” reported the Cincinnati Daily Commercial. Ivana Trump's ex-husband Rossano Rubicondi has died. He was 49.

Trump confirmed the news of Rubicondi's death to PEOPLE on Saturday. "I'm devastated," she told PEOPLE.

The actor and model's death was announced Friday by Italian TV personality Simona Ventura, who shared a throwback photo of herself and Rubicondi on Twitter.

"Rossano… Thanks for the journey we made together, for the quarrels, the pisses but also the clarifications and laughter, so many, that we did together. Have a good trip RiP," Ventura, 56, wrote.

Details around Rubicondi's death are not yet known. Reps for Rubicondi did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Italian news outlet Internapoli reported that Rubicondi had been sick for a year.

Rubicondi was born March 14, 1972, in Rome, Italy. He appeared in such films as The Eighteenth Angel which starred Rachael Leigh Cook and The Golden Bowl with Uma Thurman and Kate Beckinsale. In recent years, he was working on launching Rossano To Go, a pizzeria in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump, 72, married Rubicondi, her fourth husband, in April 2008, following six years of dating. The $3 million nuptials were hosted by her ex-husband Donald Trump at his Mar-A-Lago resort in Palm Beach, and their daughter Ivanka Trump served as her maid of honor. "It's not a 24-7 marriage, but we're both enjoying it!" Ivana told PEOPLE in 2009, referring to the couple's often long-distance relationship.

Although they filed for divorce less than a year after tying the knot, they kept up an on-and-off relationship, even dancing together on the Italian version of Dancing with the Stars in 2018. Ivana later revealed they called it quits in 2019.

"The relationship just ran its course," she told Page Six at the time. "Rossano spends a lot of time in Italy and I spend a lot of time in New York, Miami and St-Tropez, and he has to work. The long-distance relationship really doesn't work. We had a good time and are friends. The split was amicable."

"Ivana is always family for me," Rubicondi said at the time, adding that she has a "good heart … we are super close. I have good respect for her."

The friendly exes were spotted together as recently as July when they enjoyed an evening stroll through New York City in photos obtained by the Daily Mail.

Duffy, who is a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and a former cast of MTV’s “The Real World” before he went into politics, recently resigned from his Wisconsin congressional seat to spend more time with his family.

During the conversation with the four ladies on the panel, Mr. Duffy predicted President Joe Biden’s sweeping Build Back Better agenda and accompanying spending package were likely to pass.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Europol have signed a Working Arrangement that facilitates the sharing of information and expertise in the fight against fraud and corruption in Europe.

Europol today hosted European Investment Bank Vice-President Kris Peeters for the signing of a Working Arrangement between our two organisations. Mr. Peeters was joined at Europol’s headquarters in The Hague by Europol’s Executive Director, Catherine De Bolle.

The Arrangement provides a legal framework for the exchange of information and expertise relating to serious crime, with the objective of preventing organised crime in multiple areas - including financial crime, terrorism, and cybercrime. Today’s official signing seals the integration and cooperation the two parties, particularly relating to the prevention of fraud and corruption risks arising from the post-pandemic economic recovery.

Money laundering and the financing of terrorist groups, as well as other forms of serious crime, pose serious threats to the security of the EU and its financial infrastructure. Working Arrangements such as this with the European Investment Bank and other European institutions will foster collaboration that protects rights and prevents criminal activities.

Working together on common ground

Kris Peeters, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank, said: “The cooperation with Europol reinforces the EIB capacity to prevent and combat fraud and corruption globally. This agreement takes even more relevance in the context of the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Editor—Jefferson’s editorial about vaccination and its adverse effects mentions our research.1 We found that immunisation starting at birth was associated with a decreased risk of insulin dependent diabetes, while immunisation starting after age 2 months was associated with an increased risk of diabetes in both rodents and humans.2 We initiated a collaboration with Dr Jaakko Tuomilehto to study the effect of Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine on the incidence of diabetes. Roughly 116 000 Finnish children were randomised to receive either four doses of the vaccine, starting at 3 months of age, or one dose at 24 months of age.3 We calculated the incidence of insulin dependent diabetes in both groups until age 10 and in a group that did not receive the vaccine—a cohort that included all 128 500 children born in Finland in the 24 months before the study of the vaccine began.

A conference was held in Bethesda, Maryland, in May 1998 to discuss our data. At the conference we stated that the data on the vaccine support our published findingsthat immunisation starting after the age of 2 months is associated with an increased risk of diabetes. Our analysis is further supported by a similar rise in diabetes after immunisation with H influenzae type b vaccine in the United States4 and United Kingdom.5 Furthermore, the increased risk of diabetes in the vaccinated group exceeds the expected decreased risk of complications of H influenzae meningitis.

Research into immunisation has been based on the theory that the benefits of immunisation far outweigh the risks from delayed adverse events and so long term safety studies do not need to be performed. When looking at diabetes—only one potential chronic adverse event—we found that the rise in the prevalence of diabetes may more than offset the expected decline in long term complications of H influenzae meningitis. Thus diabetes induced by vaccine should not be considered a rare potential adverse event. The incidence of many other chronic immunological diseases, including asthma, allergies, and immune mediated cancers, has risen rapidly and may also be linked to immunisation.

We believe that the public should be fully informed that vaccines, though effective in preventing infections, may have long term adverse effects. An educated public will probably increasingly demand proper safety studies before widespread immunisation. We believe that the outcome of this decision will be the development of safer vaccine technology.
