On January 23rd, 2020. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declines to declare China virus outbreak as a global health emergency. As we all know, the Coronavirus is not treatable at the moment. The number of infected and deaths has risen more than ten times (infected from 800 - close to 10,000) within only 5 days. Part of it is related to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus under estimated the coronavirus. We strongly think Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is not fit for his role as WHO Director General. We call for the Immediate Resignation of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

 

A lot of us are really disappointed, we believe WHO is supposed to be political neutral. Without any investigation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus solely believes on the death and infected numbers that the Chinese government provided with them.

 

On the other hand, Taiwan should not be excluded from WHO for any political reasons. Their technologies are far more advanced than some of the countries on the β€œselected WHO list”.

These screenshots show a 45 minute chat on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 17. From 2:31 pm to 3:15 pm, 5 separate users sent a total of 20 messages. β€œFreshCamel” confirmed that there were a total of 13 users β€œpresent” in the chat room, but the users known as β€œSeverus,” β€œRoger,” β€œHuck,” β€œJuules,” and β€œDooku” are those who consistently speak the most in these daily chats.

 

The chat begins with mention of β€œRR” and Mueller, hours before Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced that former FBI Director Robert Mueller would be named as the Special Prosecutor handling the probe into the Trump campaign’s communications with Russia. The users admit that the news will β€œblindside” the White House.

 

Then, the topic of conversation turns to an individual referred to as β€œMF” and whether or not these users should work to β€œput [him] back in the news.” They eventually agree that an individual known as β€œS” will work to draft a β€œmemo” somehow connecting β€œMF” to Turkey and the user known as β€œHuck” will use a secured connection with their β€œfriends in New York.”

 

On Thursday, a major story broke that former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had accepted money from the Turkish government and then intervened on their behalf in U.S. military operations. Flynn and Trump associates have denied these reports, but Flynn remains the subject of an ongoing FBI investigation. The allusion to a β€œmemo” also comes after news broke that former FBI Director James Comey wrote in a memo that President Trump directly asked him to end the investigation into Flynn.

 

The chat goes on to cover several other topics: including a β€œproject” involving an individual who this groups refers to as β€œLimey,” a term for a British citizen. In recent months, a former British Member of Parliament named Louise Mensch has captivated the Internet with reports and leaks that are often proven as false or dubiously-sourced. Mensch’s reports often suggest that the FBI and β€œdeep state” are close to indicting and arresting Flynn and several other Trump associates for espionage.

 

Third Estate Newsgroup suspects, but cannot confirm, that this mention of β€œLimey” refers to Mensch, and if true, would suggest that Mensch’s β€œsources” might be members of the intelligence community, but could be feeding her false information to support their own leaking and disinformation operations.

 

Third Estate Newsgroup is working to confirm the identify of the β€œtape” that these individuals delivered to someone referred to as β€œAEWP,” but has not had any success so far.

 

The conversation ends when the individual known as β€œJuules” comments that the media will have their hands full because β€œRM is happening tonight,” seemingly referring to the announced appointment of Robert Mueller just hours after this specific chat was closed.

 

β€œFreshCamel” told Third Estate Newsgroup that the conversations held by this group were often coded, and because he didn’t pay close attention to American politics, he didn’t realize that these individuals were discussing anything more than normal work responsibilities. Due to the nature of the messaging platform, he could not screenshot conversations after they had occurred, but confirmed that β€œMF” (Michael Flynn) and β€œLimey” (Louise Mensch) had been topics of conversation before.

 

β€œFreshCamel” is not currently aware of the identities or affiliations of the other members in the group, but suggested that they are all members of intelligence organizations. Third Estate Newsgroup has independently reviewed and verified these screenshots and other information provided by β€œFreshCamel.”

 

These screenshots might just be the first β€œproof” for Trump supporters who have decried the existence of a subversive β€œdeep state” working to bring down Trump’s presidency for months. Somehow, the individuals present in this chat were aware of both the timing and identity of the Special Prosecutor before he was announced, and seemed to provide the information used in the stories about Flynn that surfaced on Thursday.

 

The references to other groups within this chat, such as β€œthe company group” and the β€œgrapevine”, suggest that this group is just one of many groups within the intelligence community that are conversing secretly about topics and operations related to the investigation into Donald Trump.

It all started in late 2017, when we reported that JPM was quietly trying to sell the world's oldest gold trader after a massive money laundering scandal terminally crippled the reputation of one of the most iconic names in the business, resulting in Canada’s Bank of Nova Scotia exploring options for its gold business ScotiaMocatta. As reported at the time, Scotiabank made the decision to sell ScotiaMocatta following a massive money laundering scandal centered on a US refinery that involved smuggled gold from South America, a fascinating story which we profiled here several years back. For those unfamiliar, the ScotiaMocatta business better known as the world's oldest gold trader and a mainstay in PM trading since its founding in 1684 as Mocatta Bullion, was a precious metal and base metal trading company that operated as the metals trading division of the Bank of Nova Scotia. A few months later in February 2018, we reported that JPMorgan's attempt to sell the business failed, and one year later, in January 2019 Bank of Nova Scotia quietly dropped the "Mocatta" name from its metals-trading business, shedding the last vestiges of a firm dating back nearly 350 years as the Canadian owner tried to absorb the platform into its capital-markets division.

 

The restructuring attempt lasted a little over a year, until its failure this week when the Scotiabank told staff on Tuesday it would close its metals business, drawing the curtain on one of the most venerable names in precious metals trading, Reuters reported citing two sources. Scotia was for years the world’s biggest lender to the physical precious metals industry, with a history stretching to the founding in 1684 of London gold dealer Mocatta Bullion, which it bought in 1997. Once a global player with more than 100 staff in offices from New York and London to India and Hong Kong, the bank effectively exited the business in 2018 following the abovementioned strategic review and unsuccessful attempt to find a buyer.

 

"Scotia had a global call with all its metals staff and said it was shutting down its metals business,” said a Reuters source. "The plan is to unwind the metals business." Scotiabank's exit of the metals business ends an end of an era that began in 1671 when Moses Mocatta opened an account with one of London’s most famous goldsmith bankers, Edward Backwell. Mocatta and his descendants would go on to build what became one of the world’s largest metals-trading businesses and the oldest member of London’s bullion market. The firm has long participated in the London gold auction, where an industry benchmark price is set twice a day.

 

Scotiabank came onto the scene in 1997 when it bought the Mocatta Bullion and Base Metals unit from Standard Chartered and renamed it ScotiaMocatta. The Toronto-based bank gained a business with 180 employees and 10 offices worldwide, including in New York, London, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore. It all came crashing down in 2018 however following a historic money-laundering, metals rehypothecation scandal that wiped out nearly 350 years of good reputation overnight. Sources told Reuters Scotia would not take on new business and would wind down existing activities by around the beginning of 2021. Some staff would be kept on over that period while others would be made redundant. Around 15 people worked in Scotia’s metals business, Reuters reported,around three-quarters of them in precious metals and the remainder in industrial metals. That compares to around 140 five years ago. Even after exiting the metals business, Scotiabank will remain one of the five banks that settle gold trades and one of 12 market makers that provide liquidity in the London market. The bank is also a participant in daily auctions that set a globally used gold benchmark price.

 

That said, without a dedicated metals business, Scotia's presence in the London gold market will be only symbolic, as the bank hands over the bulk of the business to HSBC and JPMorgan, the two titans who currently dominate the London PM business, and for a good reason: gold trading in London is estimated to be worth more than $5 trillion a year, resulting in some fat commissions for all involved.

NGO working on flying more migrants to Germany

 

The German migrant NGO β€œMission Lifeline” is working diligently to raise money in order to fly scores of migrants from Greece to Germany.

 

According to the organization’s spokesman, the NGO has managed to raise about 55,000 euros in the few days since they first announced their plan. The money would be used to pay for two separate flights that would transport approximately 150 migrants from Greek camps to Germany.

Guillaume Soro, the former rebel leader running for president in Ivory Coast, was convicted in absentia on Tuesday of embezzlement and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The former prime minister, who is in exile in France, has denied the charges, claiming they are politically motivated.

Remdesivir Doesn't work on COVID-19

 

The antiviral medicine remdesivir from Gilead Sciences failed to speed the improvement of patients with Covid-19 or prevent them from dying, according to results from a long-awaited clinical trial conducted in China. Gilead, however, said the data suggest a β€œpotential benefit.”

 

A summary of the study results was inadvertently posted to the website of the World Health Organization and seen by STAT on Thursday, but then removed.

 

A draft manuscript was provided by the authors to WHO and inadvertently posted on the website and taken down as soon as the mistake was noticed. The manuscript is now undergoing peer review and we are waiting for a final version before WHO comments on it,” said WHO spokesperson Daniela Bagozzi

 

Gilead spokesperson Amy Flood said the company believes β€œthe post included inappropriate characterization of the study.” Because the study was stopped early because it had too few patients, she said, it cannot β€œenable statistically meaningful conclusions.” However, she said, β€œtrends in the data suggest a potential benefit for remdesivir, particularly among patients treated early in disease.”

 

The data (for details, see screenshot below) will be closely scrutinized but are also likely imperfect. The study was terminated prematurely, which could have affected the results. The context that would be provided by a full manuscript is missing, and the data have not been reviewed as normally occurs before publication.

Many studies are being run to test remdesivir, and this one will not be the final word. Results are expected soon from a Gilead-run study in severe Covid-19 patients, although that study may be difficult to interpret because the drug is not compared to patients receiving only standard treatment. Encouraging data from patients in that study at the University of Chicago were described by researchers at a virtual town hall and obtained by STAT last week. However, unlike those data, these new results are from a randomized controlled trial, the medical gold standard.

 

Gilead is also running a study with a control group in more moderate Covid-19 patients, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is running a study that compares remdesivir to placebo. There are even more studies of the drug ongoing.

 

According to the summary of the China study, remdesivir was β€œnot associated with a difference in time to clinical improvement” compared to a standard of care control. After one month, it appeared 13.9% of the remdesivir patients had died compared to 12.8% of patients in the control arm. The difference was not statistically significant.

 

β€œIn this study of hospitalized adult patients with severe COVID-19 that was terminated prematurely, remdesivir was not associated with clinical or virological benefits,” the summary states. The study was terminated prematurely because it was difficult to enroll patients in China, where the number of Covid-19 cases was decreasing.

 

An outside researcher said that the results mean that any benefit from remdesivir is likely to be small.

 

β€œIf there is no benefit to remdesivir in a study this size, this suggests that the overall benefit of remdesivir in this population with advanced infection is likely to be small in the larger Gilead trial,” said Andrew Hill, senior visiting research fellow at Liverpool University.

 

He added that the results of the study should be pooled with larger studies being conducted by Gilead using a technique called meta-analysis to allow for β€œa balanced view of the efficacy of remdesivir from all randomized trials.”

Bipartisan pair of senators want antitrust investigation into meatpackers amid plant closures

 

Sens. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, and Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat, called upon the Federal Trade Commission to launch an antitrust investigation into the meatpacking industry. The Wednesday letter by the farm-state senators was sent after President Trump's executive order declaring, under the Defense Production Act, that meat processing plants were part of the critical infrastructure of the United States.

 

The meatpacking industry is controlled by only a handful of massive multinational companies that have focused meat processing into fewer and fewer plants across the nation. That has left the country’s food supply chain vulnerable to disruptions, the senators said. The shuttering of three pork plants due to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted β€œin the shutdown of a staggering 15 percent of America’s pork production” at a time when stable supply chains have become more vital than ever, the letter from Baldwin and Hawley reads. β€œAs a result, farmers cannot process their livestock β€” which are costly to maintain β€” and consumers risk seeing shortages at grocery stores, exacerbating the food insecurity that all too many Americans are currently experiencing,” the senators wrote. β€œThese harms might have been mitigated if the meatpacking industry was less concentrated. The current COVID-19 crisis has exposed the vulnerabilities of American supply chains and the importance of ensuring that, when disaster strikes, America’s food supplies are not in the hands of a few, mostly foreign-based firms.”

 

Hawley and Baldwin caution that three multinational firms (Tyson Foods from the U.S., JBS from Brazil, and Smithfield from the People’s Republic of China) "control 63 percent of America’s pork processing." β€œThe FTC has the power to shed light on these growing competition and security problems in our food supply," they said. "The Commission should ask probing questions about major meatpacking firms’ conduct, pricing, and contracting, as well as how their commitments to overseas interests impact the U.S. market and national security. Moreover, because a competitive food industry is so critical to the public interest, you should make the findings of any investigation public.”

 

The senators also argue that before the COVID-19 crisis, the financial effects of concentration in the American meatpacking industry have had a deleterious impact on U.S. farmers, ranchers, and consumers. "Between 1980 and 2009, the price a rancher was able to obtain per pound of beef declined from $1.97 to 93 cents (adjusted for inflation)," they said. "Likewise, between 1999 and 2008, real consumer prices for ground beef increased by 24 percent (adjusted for inflation), from a monthly average price of $1.89 a pound in 1999 to $2.34 a pound in 2008."

Bipartisan pair of senators want antitrust investigation into meatpackers amid plant closures

 

Sens. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, and Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat, called upon the Federal Trade Commission to launch an antitrust investigation into the meatpacking industry.

 

The Wednesday letter by the farm-state senators was sent after President Trump's executive order declaring, under the Defense Production Act, that meat processing plants were part of the critical infrastructure of the United States.

 

The meatpacking industry is controlled by only a handful of massive multinational companies that have focused meat processing into fewer and fewer plants across the nation. That has left the country’s food supply chain vulnerable to disruptions, the senators said

 

The shuttering of three pork plants due to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted β€œin the shutdown of a staggering 15 percent of America’s pork production” at a time when stable supply chains have become more vital than ever, the letter from Baldwin and Hawley reads.

 

β€œAs a result, farmers cannot process their livestock β€” which are costly to maintain β€” and consumers risk seeing shortages at grocery stores, exacerbating the food insecurity that all too many Americans are currently experiencing,” the senators wrote.

β€œThese harms might have been mitigated if the meatpacking industry was less concentrated. The current COVID-19 crisis has exposed the vulnerabilities of American supply chains and the importance of ensuring that, when disaster strikes, America’s food supplies are not in the hands of a few, mostly foreign-based firms.”

 

Hawley and Baldwin caution that three multinational firms (Tyson Foods from the U.S., JBS from Brazil, and Smithfield from the People’s Republic of China) "control 63 percent of America’s pork processing."

 

β€œThe FTC has the power to shed light on these growing competition and security problems in our food supply," they said. "The Commission should ask probing questions about major meatpacking firms’ conduct, pricing, and contracting, as well as how their commitments to overseas interests impact the U.S. market and national security. Moreover, because a competitive food industry is so critical to the public interest, you should make the findings of any investigation public.”

 

The senators also argue that before the COVID-19 crisis, the financial effects of concentration in the American meatpacking industry have had a deleterious impact on U.S. farmers, ranchers, and consumers.

 

"Between 1980 and 2009, the price a rancher was able to obtain per pound of beef declined from $1.97 to 93 cents (adjusted for inflation)," they said. "Likewise, between 1999 and 2008, real consumer prices for ground beef increased by 24 percent (adjusted for inflation), from a monthly average price of $1.89 a pound in 1999 to $2.34 a pound in 2008."

 

Over 150 of the nation’s largest meat-processing plants are in counties where the rates of coronavirus spread are among the nation’s highest, according to a study performed by USA Today and the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.

 

These facilities show over 1 in 3 of the country’s largest beef, pork, and poultry processing facilities, and although current production is stable, 2,200 meat processing workers have become infected at 48 different plants.

The Trump administration has unveiled cleaning and disinfecting guidelines as part of the White House’s efforts to reopen the country. CNN's Chris Cuomo now claims that he was β€œpast quarantine” as long ago as April 12. This is either a lie or an inadvertent admission of another lie that he broadcast on April 20 when he staged his "coronavirus resurrection." In other words, Cuomo was lying then, or he is lying now. Possibly both! Take your pick.

 

The host’s apparent admission of wrongdoing came Wednesday as he sought to shame Vice President Mike Pence for failing to wear a mask during a recent visit to the Mayo Clinic.

 

β€œEveryone knows he did the wrong thing,” Cuomo tweeted in reference to the vice president’s choice this week to forgo a mask. β€œBut the criticism misses the fact that a significant part of his base thinks masks are stupid anyway.”

 

Though Cuomo is not wrong about Pence forgoing a mask, he is also the last person who should be giving lectures on proper coronavirus safety protocols. After all, Cuomo, who claimed on March 31 that he had been diagnosed with the virus, is the one who broke quarantine on April 12 to drive his family to East Hampton, New York, 30 minutes away from their home in Southampton. The CNN host even got into an altercation with a cyclist, who called him out for possibly spreading the disease.

 

Naturally, Twitter users were quick Wednesday to note the hypocrisy in Cuomo’s criticism of Pence. The CNN host actually responded to one of his critics, claiming that the story of him breaking coronavirus safety protocol on Easter Sunday β€œis just a lie.”

These last weeks, Mr Trump is not talking about coronavirus anymore. Now he is talking about the Chinese virus, or the Chinese coronavirus. This small change will have huge consequences.

 

One of the most important aspects of Chinese culture is Face. It’s difficult to translate because we don’t have this concept in western culture, and some people mistakenly simplify by translating it as β€œhonor” or similar. There are full books talking about it, and many different definitions. To understand Face it’s important to understand that social relationships in China are based on belonging to a group. Work, university friends, family etc. But also city, province, country… Inside of a group, you act according to your rank in that group, not according to your feelings. And your rank in that group is determined by several issues, but probably the most important is the Face that you have in relation to the other people in this group. In the west we have bank accounts, in China they have Face accounts. Everybody is aware of the Face they have on each group relating to the others (so in small groups, you are aware of the Face that others have)

 

This is one of the pillars of Chinese culture, probably its most important concept, and the root of most of the misunderstandings between the East and the West. Face rules everything.

 

For example, Western cultures tend to think in terms of β€œtruth” and β€œrightness” (where being innocent and right is most important). In China, Face is more important than Truth and Rightness. So, many times, truth is disregarded because you MUST do what the situation demands in order not to loose face, or to avoid somebody else from loosing face. Westeners do not understand this fact and are exasperated when Chinese say a thing and later do another.

 

Is this wrong? No, it’s simply another set of core values

 

So, one of the worst things that you can make in China is make someone loose face, especially in front of others. In western cultures, it would be tantamount to telling someone he is a son of a bitch, and continue the conversation as if nothing happened.

 

Sorry, that was longer than I anticipated. But it’s very important to understand the concept of Face when you are dealing with your Chinese counterpart. and clearly Trump does not (or, most likely, does not care)

 

It’s important to understand that the first weeks of the Covid-19, when it was inside of China, some individuals in the government were loosing Face for their handling of the situation. But once the virus gets out of China, and begins killing people all around the world, China as a nation begins loosing Face. A lot.

Shiva tried to sabotage the group’s efforts, by showing up at Legislature Hearings without the science panel he had promised and delivering self-promotional testimony so loaded with insulting vulgarity and invective, that the Public Health Committee shut down the hearing, calling Shiva β€œa prick.” Shiva then picked a loud fight with one of the moms accusing her of using her child for political purposes. β€œHe threw us under the bus,” Edwards recalls. I traveled in Taiwain and China some years ago. My host could speak/read/write Mandarin, so we went completely off the beaten path, zero tourist shit.

 

One day in Taiwan, host was working for the day so I meandered to Tea shops and acquired Oolong teas. Spent 2 hrs in one shop with a women, I could basically only say hello and thank you. Acquired a number of teas, including some very nice varieties from Ali-Shan.

Prolly came home with 2 lbs of tea overall!

Learned Gongfu Cha proper way, observing closely when we were hosted by others in their homes.

 

We traveled "By Coin". We'd go into a travel agent, ask if they had flights to Beijing and Shanghai for example, and with both available, we'd flip a coin to decide where to go next. Recall such WIDE EYES from a travel agent, that we would "travel by luck".

 

Brewing alone, I just skip the Dong Bao Dei (messing spelling up - fairness cup).

Have been enjoying Ooolong of late during the lockdown here.

According to Politico, a 57-page memo from Mitch McConnell’s senatorial committee instructs GOP candidates to blame the coronavirus pandemic on China, commit to stand up to China, end U.S. dependence on Chinese manufacturing and tell voters β€œmy opponent is soft on China.”

β€œChina is not an ally, and they’re not just a rival β€” they are an adversary and the Chinese Communist Party is our enemy,” reads one of the talking points.

Sunday, Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas echoed the memo, charging that China’s leaders wanted the coronavirus to spread because they β€œdid not want to see their relative power and standing in the world decline.”

Cotton went on: β€œIt’s a scandal to me that we have trained so many of the Chinese communists. If Chinese students want to come here and learn Shakespeare and the Federalist Papers β€” that’s what they need to learn from America; they don’t need to learn quantum computing and artificial intelligence from America.”

The Wall Street Journal ran back-to-back editorials last week urging a more confrontational stance toward Beijing and endorsing GOP plans for new defense spending on U.S. air and naval forces in the Western Pacific.

Cotton and the Journal are not wrong in their characterization of China’s behavior. It is belligerent toward its neighbors and hostile toward the United States.

China has indeed sent student-spies to study at U.S. universities.

Under cover of the coronavirus crisis, Beijing is moving to strip the 7 million people of Hong Kong of the rights they were guaranteed when the British departed. The Uighurs of Xinjiang are being persecuted and coercively cleansed of their cultural and religious beliefs.

The Peoples Liberation Army seeks to intimidate Taiwan by sending military aircraft near the island. China’s warships have harassed Vietnamese, Malaysian, Philippine and Indonesian commercial vessels to assert its claim to the entire South China Sea.

Chinese propagandists have accused the U.S. of creating the coronavirus crisis that broke out in Wuhan last winter.

JFK may have been inexact when he observed: β€œWhen written in Chinese, the word β€˜crisis’ is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other represents opportunity.”

But that is an accurate description of how China has conducted itself since it unleashed the Wuhan virus upon the world.

What course does the Journal recommend that we pursue?

β€œFreedom of navigation exercises” by U.S. naval and air forces are β€œnot enough to secure the Western Pacific from Chinese domination.”

Instead, the Journal says the U.S. β€œmay need to start recognizing claims of countries like Vietnam to make China pay a price for further expansion. The U.S. should also try to maintain its defense pact with the Philippines’ mercurial President Rodrigo Duterte.”

The Journal seems to be suggesting that we formally recognize and back Vietnam’s claims to disputed islands in the South China Sea. None of these islands belongs to us?

Why should the U.S. Navy risk a clash at sea by making us a party to these latest quarrels halfway around the world?

Vietnam is a country of 95 million people. Like China, it is also Communist. The Philippines have more than 7,000 islands and 100 million people. Indonesia has 17,000 to 18,000 islands and is the fourth-most populous nation on earth with 267 million citizens.

Cannot the nations that share the South China Sea with China acquire coastal navies to defend their own waters? Why is the Journal volunteering the U.S. as Coast Guard of the South China Sea?

The Journal argues that with Chinese nationalism rising under Xi Jinping, β€œIt’s more important than ever for the U.S. to signal that it considers the independence of Pacific states a vital interest and isn’t retreating.”

The independence and borders of these states is undeniably vital to them. But how is that vital to us, 8,000 miles away, on the other side of the Pacific? This is power politics, pure and simple.

Just do some basic research into "Harvard MIT brain chipping" and the Singularity University on board Moffet Airfield.

As a side note, when I went on board Moffet in 2012 to shop at their commissary, I couldn't find a native English speaker to give me directions on post.
