Know your enemy. - Discussion of clowns, bots and shills.

While a shortlist of how to spot shills is often shared in the general, it will be helpful to make a more in-depth discussion. Toward the end of Q's duty station on halfchan, the board was overrun with clowns and shills pushing bump limits so it became impossible to read let alone bake. Not only since Q, but many have long experience on the chans and other platforms; some anons have become expert marksman veterans at shill spotting and sniping - share what you've learned.

If you find a good example of a clown, bot, shill, etc trying to slide or disrupt the general, post it here for posterity. How to filter, what to filter, why to filter (or why not), tactics and strategies. The attacks will only get worse.

Correct The Record/Media Matters/American Bridge are all names for essentially the same David Brock managed-George Soros funded PAC. "The Crew" and "Share Blue" are also part of the same group. Working for the Clinton Campaign, the earliest shills were CTR, and mentioned in DNC emails calling them 'nerd virgins'.

What is cointelpro? An FBI program used from 1950s-1970s that would use covert and sometimes illegal projects aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and disrupting domestic political organizations.

Has recently been in conversation with someone who knows how to doxx people. Given his death threats, this is a credible threat to the PG Investigation team's safety. He needs to be identifed ASAP before he kills someone.

What do we mean when we say a shill 'glows in the dark?'

You will often see veteran anons call out a shill bot or clown with the phrase 'you glow in the dark'. Its not just a turn of phrase. The veteran shill spotters recognize shill patterns immediately, after long years on the chans. They don't have to think whether a post is from a shill or not.

A recent example is the 'where is Q' concern-fagging shill. Concern-fagging is where a shill pretends to be on the side of anons but having doubts, and hey, you should doubt along with them. A Veteran shill-spotter knows immediately this is a shill. They don't have to go through the thought process of logically figuring out this is a shill anymore, when its obvious they are just re-using same-o same-o tactics. old tired tactics lifted straight from the playbook make the shill posts 'glow in the dark'.

Shills:

Shills are often paid to be here: Correct the Record etc. There are no grass roots shill groups here. Even the unpaid shills are riled up by Soros $ prompting them. They get memos on what talking points to do that day so they run off similar instructions for a group of shills.

Shitposters:

Sometimes a shill is just a shitposter; a shitposter is someone being contrary just to mess with anons. Anons will do this to each other all over the chans. Shitposters have different patterns to their posts than shills and they go away as soon as they are bored, which is very fast, and look for the next thing to fuck with on the internet.

Bots:

Bots are automatic scripts that run and reply to posts that trigger them. They still require a human(s) to start the script(s) for each new thread.

Clowns: If a shill falls somewhere on the web of the deep state then these are known as 'clowns' from '[C]lowns [I]n [A]merica. They use manipulation tactics and adjust to topics rather than working from talking points; read up on cointelpro.

samefagging: When shills support each other when its painfully obvious the situation doesn't call for it. "really anon, that is fascinating! Im so glad you said that. I was thinking that same thing!' etc-nobody on the chans talks that way.

But there are also Russian, Muslim and Jew shills, Communists and anyone else interested in taking down American freedoms by undermining one of the last free speech spaces on the internet. Q didn't bring them– the free speech on the chans has been under attack by shills for years but the shill lost to us years ago. Now that Q has happened, their efforts are increasing. But shills can't win over anons-they only try their shit to sway newcomers. Anons aren't the target-new readers are.

Double spacing a post (reddit style spacing) comes out with an odd appearance on the chans. Reddit posts create paragraphs after two returns/enter, while the chans create paragraphs after one return/enter. Therefore double spaced posts, (Reddit-forced spacing) usually indicates a person new to the chans who is not yet used to chan-style spacing, and quite possibly a shill.

It is not necessarily an indicator of a shill, but is generally an indicator of someone who hasn't been on the chans very long.

Good afternoon gentlemen (and ladies),

I come from other parts of the internet, and exposing shills, bots, socks, the technology they use and who uses them was a thing I used to do, and I will share my discoveries:

1) Image based captcha don't actually work on modern tech as most bot accounts have smart OCR systems that can detect even 'pretty bad' images and answer the captcha - the one you use for this board wouldn't even stop them (as you've discovered)

2) Text based questions can be answered by one of two systems:

2a) The operator 'adds the answer', or

2b) An AI inference engine tries to 'guess' or 'interpret' the question (EG What is 2 + 2? 4, for example)

3) You can thwart most bots by having a question/answer that changes on a daily basis (with no reuse) on top of a captcha, this can impede users however.

4) Bot operators are called 'handlers', and they can operate between 2 to 100 accounts. The average is between 15 to 30.

5) The software they use is commercially developed, although it appears some are homebrewed applications that run in Python (possibly to pair up with TensorFlow?)

6) Building a forum bot is incredibly easy: Python with mechanize library and BeautifulSoup (you might want to consider fighting fire with fire).

7) Governments, Corporations and Political groups all use bots. A prime example of corporations is the Net Neutrality spam. They use it to astroturf grassroots movements and artificially incite aggression/action/results (think Arab Spring).

8) Organisations confirmed: IDF (both professional and hired students), Mossad, CIA, NSA (Edward Snowden admits as such), parts of MI5, US Airforce, The MoD (specifically: the Army), MI6 (minor role), FBI (usually to honeypot/entrap/snare), GCHQ, FSB and whatever the KGB's replacement is. Democrats are more active with social engineering/bots/socks, Republicans are playing catch up. British politicians have yet to catch on, it seems. Pretty much every corporation does it - usually they send in their employees to write positive blurbs or counter-criticism (look at any critical article about Microsoft, Red Hat, systemd etc).

9) It costs a lot of money, but gets cheaper with automation and AI.

10) Handlers can't be in more than two places at once (mentally speaking: the bots log/alert the replies), and the more people simultaneously engaging them from different places (as their 'differing' accounts), the better as it overwhelms their responses and often they make mistakes.

11) Their bots are often 'tuned' to specific keywords and are capable of bulk-scanning threads (usually the last page to check for responses). If you mess up the keywords and don't mention them directly, the alert system appears to fail - they will get notified by other bot handlers however if it's something they've missed, and the new keyword will be added.

12) Some bot/sock accounts talk amongst themselves. Usually so one sets up, the other introduces information.

13) They will strawman arguments - present a weak front under one account, attack it with another. Don't accept or try to defend weak arguments.

14) The different groups have different agendas, from what I can see:

IDF: Solely concerned with topics that directly relate to israel, berating palestine (treating palestinians as non-human etc), attacking iran, tackling anti-semitism

US agencies: Whatever the current US politics are, always pro-military

UK agencies: Whatever the current UK politics are, always pro-British, sometimes pro-US (they have minor disagreements)

Russia: Usually anti-agency/anti-US/UK establishment, will bring up topics that advantage them (Syria, Palestine, US abuses of power)

Corporations: Anything directly relating to them (usually they target criticism)

Political groups: Shilling in favour of their political agenda/who they want you to vote for/attacking other parties.

I hope my observations are of some use. If I think of more I'll get back.

Thought of more that might be relevant:

1) Advanced software (like in HBGary) will sometimes try to create 'backstories' or 'multiple accounts' across social media outlets - this is to make the poster seem more legitimate than they actually are. The one thing they can't easily create is 'history' (especially once outed). Some bot/sock accounts - in rare exceptions - are 'sleeper accounts', that are created historically some time earlier that might be dragged into bigger fights (so they appear more legitimate to a skeptical audience).

2) They utilise ISPs or systems that give high IP rotation (EG 'mobile', Verizon Business, satellite, etc) - essentially IPs that 'muddy waters' and make it difficult for source attribution. Proxies are less common but do get used. Normal posters tend to have consistent IPs or ISPs in contrast.

3) Handlers will target what are known as 'leaders' in social media circles. These are the people who are influencing the rest (Q an example, but also board owners, admins, that sort of thing - anyone who has a 'big presence'). The goal is to disrupt the leaders in order to disrupt the followers. They may also try to insert 'counter' leaders (who emulate the main leader in some way) who are basically like 'mimicry' style leaders. The counter to this is for everyone to independently think on their own terms rather than a 'leader-follower' network.

4) Government level, and some high level corporation (think military industries type shit) have what's known as 'writing analysis' tools. This allows them to unmask anonymous posters on the internet (kinda like how you identify shills based on how they act/behave - except automated). Ironically this can be used against scripted bots if you have someone smart enough to build your own version.

4a) The analysis tool, from what I can gather works on the following:

Post length (average length of posts).

Unique/key words (British people use different words to Americans, for example, but also overusing specific memes)

Unique phrases/sentences (you might have a common phrase or sign-off)

Spelling error rate (smarter people are more literate, for example)

Other match methodology that I'm not familiar with

5) A huge tip-off for bots is if they operate 'around the clock'. Normal people - if unemployed - can only really work for one 24 hour segment at most (sleep deprivation kicks in), and at normal, 12 hours. Bots often will be up/posting with a four hour gap or less between posts (ID by IP, post content and spacing). Contrast workplace/homeplace IPs (anyone posting from home then work needs at least two distinct ISPs).

6) Another handler tip-off is they will either claim to be a student (in some cases they actually are: israel pays students to shill for israel, public knowledge, look it up) or 'retired' as an explanation for why they aren't working. In some rare cases they will claim to be 'self-employed' but with apparently no work ethic (basically: look for absences that should be there if 'normal').

7) Horse's laugh/ridicule is a common discredit tactic, but can be made to backfire by earmarking them as immature/unable to handle the mature subject material.

8) Shills are, surprisingly, human. Generally, two types of shill: zealots/psychopaths, and punch-clock shills. Zealots (EG IDF) believe in the cause (they genuinely believe you're evil), psychopaths do it for the lulz, neither can be convinced otherwise. Punch-clock shills only do it for pay/lack of alternative. Edward Snowden was a punch-clock shill - he defected. Break the fourth wall, reach out. They know they're deceiving citizens.

Some shills even purposefully subvert their own work, and will make it obvious - on purpose - that they are a shill. They do have 'supervisors' so they can't be subversive all the time. Can't give examples, their 'supervisors' would clamp down on it. Appeal to the handler, not the bot. A 'good' shill is one you can't see.

Homer once said in response to a bad workplace: "You don't quit, you just do your job half-assedly"

Remember, some will have families, so there's no 'exit stage left'. Expose the shills, but try to also appeal to their humanity (if they have any). They will already know they're working for the bad guys on the simple fact they're attacking a forum full of people trying to expose corruption and human trafficking. Consider posting alternative job opportunities for whatever place they're from.

To the shills:

Do what you can to subvert the deception at your place of work. Even occupied France had the French resistance. A timely tip-off hint here or there can make all the difference.

Neither did I, but after I started waxing philosophical reminding people about 'enemies both foreign AND domestic', I found shills starting to waver, after they realised their enemies aren't always external - they could be their own employers. Thesedays, I hear the emphasis on 'domestic' fairly regularly amongst grey and white hats.

Appealing to shills doesn't mean compromising. Stick to your message. In some ways, it's a psychological battle - you trying to convince them and them trying to convince you. And if not you, then they're trying to convince 'the audience'.

Home field advantages:

1) You work for free (they cost money - attrition. Some might be 'free' but they're less likely to be 'loyal' unless they're zealots).

2) You're adaptable (they have to follow a script, play to a specific agenda, follow orders - you can troll to your hearts content. If it came out they were being racist, harassing or discriminatory they're legally liable)

3) They run the risk of being exposed and it all backfiring (if someone 'exposes' you for being concerned citizens there's no repercussions)

4) There's a risk their technology will fall into enemy hands (think EternalBlue-style exploit leaks)

5) Whatever they're doing now software-wise, you can likely do better: passion and talent trumps money and manpower any day of the week.

Some forum configs for better resistance:

1) Introduce post flood delays (ideally variable on post size). No true human can 'mass post' within seconds. Essentially, force bots to have a post rate akin to a human (makes the human job easier).

2) Daily captcha can be easily thwarted by a handler with low tech - they solve the captcha for the day and then leave the bot to run, either:

2a) Prompt on every post, or

2b) Prompt after X number of posts (X being whatever you'd consider 'spam' or 'bulk posting').

Alternatively, you could modify your admin powers to 'anchor' specific posters with a 'every post' captcha (which can be used as a litmus paper test). Expect the handlers to whine about it - it's easier to social engineer the admin into disabling the captcha or reducing it than it is for some tech companies to build tech to solve the captcha (as said: some are homebrew, some are commercial - commercial ones auto-solve, homebrew, not so much).

3) If you plan to deploy your own bots, instigate a policy that bots (to avoid being banned) must self-identify as bots. Consider setting up bots that hunt shills and bots ('hunter-killer' units) - these can be passive (they only need to 'read' the board and report the findings).

4) Bots sometimes break on escape characters or unicode characters: /?x009 '~;:¬/?-(*& any decent programmer will escape the read posts, but it can help to bork them with garbage information

How do you thwart the writing analysis tools?

There's two approaches, the 'bad way' and the 'good way'. The 'good way' requires teamwork, the 'bad way' is better than nothing.

1) Avoid any identifying information where and when you can (names, IP addresses, browser fingerprint etc). Keep that shit random. I 'namefag' because literally anyone can take my name - it's there to prove a point.

2) You have an internal voice. That's what gives your writing it's flavour. That internal voice is what you're hearing reading this right now. Rebuttal to this is it costs nothing to sign, takes only a few seconds to do. Best case scenario, something happens, worst case scenario, the status quo is maintained. Everything to gain, nothing to lose.

It strikes me the BO does not know how to deal with "thresholding" attacks, which might not be surprising as it's usually only reserved for forums that hit very close to the truth.

As per my previous statement, a "threshold" attack tries to find the threshold (hence the name) of when a shill post is largely indistinguishable from a normal post.

Naturally, spotting thresholding attacks is hard. But you must also be extremely careful not to allow the other side of it's edge, which is to make legitimate posts seem shill-ish.

If you delete an innocent's post, or you fail to spot the threshold attack, it has succeeded - because deleting innocent's posts will alienate them from the board which will succeed in driving them away from the forum.

It's actually better to err on the side of caution, and instead, either watch to see how a threshold attack develops (remember, it cannot remain legitimate for long), and if anything, apply pressure in the form of questions.

Short-term shills will lack sufficient local knowledge to validate themselves (but can be easily confused with newfags). The difference between shills and newfags is shills will always try to exploit hostility and DARVO, where-as newfags tend to concede or admit errors.

Long-term shills will be able to pass typical background queries, but their threads or writings will still contain fundamental flaws: the tip-off is when they REFUSE TO CORRECT THE FLAWS.

Accidental errors often bring concession and admission of error followed by a correction and no further continuance. Intentional errors are either very recluctantly 'corrected', if at all, and the behaviour remains the same in future (like a repeat offender).

Thresholding attacks only counter is observation, questioning and due diligence with expected psychological profiling of typical reactions.

Do not 'kneejerk react' because you might cause collateral, and resistant innocents (who are offended at bad adminship) are nearly indistinguishable from resistant shills (who are opposed to adminship period).

Threshold test: If someone was to enter the room and ask me to prove this was likely a thresholding attack, would I be able to prove it to them?

If yes: it's a threshold attack.

Provocation is the shill's 'discredit' tactic. The goal is to make you angry, so then you seem like some aggressor. Shills will always omit or cherry pick key details (including blatant hypocrisy), so it's always good to document in any replies previous douchebag behaviours they themselves have expressed.

Sherlock Holmes principle is thus: don't bother wasting time learning about or arguing on topics that ultimately don't impact you or that you can do nothing about. It does not matter, in your present scope of things, if the earth is round or flat.

Determining if a topic falls under the Sherlock Holmes principle:

1) Is the information I'm presently learning going to be useful, now or in the foreseeable future?

2) Is the information something I can act on? (EG use, work with)

If the answer to both questions is no, then the topic definitely falls under the Sherlock Holmes principle, and should be disregarded (for example, knowing if the earth is flat or round is only useful if you have rockets, satellites, ships etc to launch or navigate).

If the information is something you can act on but isn't useful, it again, is a good candidate for being disregarded. For example, you can act on the knowledge methos sweets cause soda bottles to erupt, but is it useful? Not really.

If something is useful but can't be acted on (EG theoretical concepts) then it likely should be retained. Can you 'act' on imaginary sums? No, but their results can give you new insights.

Likewise, don't be misled by shills trying to get you to debate over topics that aren't relevant. For all I know there could be cheese people high in orbit who enjoy telepathic TV shows on a really cheap intergalatic airwave: does knowing it actually help me or is it something I can change or act on? A scheduled Q&A session tonight with Q brought a flood of tag team kayfabe shills. 2 or more shills would pretend to fight with each other over an odd tangent.

Support shills would then take one side or the other side of the fake 'argument'.

This kayfabe tactic is to create the appearance of infighting to make anons get disgusted and leave the board. Shills have been unable to provoke anons into infighting, and so have had to create fake arguments in order to artificially portray an atmosphere of conflict.

After the faked arguments have progressed and the support shills have bolstered the fake fights, concern shills interject and comment on the faked arguments like 'wow there was so much infighting today'. And 'Why all the infighting, guise'? specifically labeling the arguments as INFIGHTING.

Anons get into hot debate sometimes, as debate can get hot in a free and open speech zone, but anons never label this infighting. Only shills label conflict..that they created…as 'infighting'.

Since the attack of 06/28, a bevy of new shills have hit the general.

They are the same type as have been shitting up 4chan/pol since just before Q's move. They are best described as 'contempt shills'. 8) Child pornography laws (given the posting of child post is often used by shills to take down facebook pages, threads, comments etc)

10) Perverting the course of justice, obstruction of justice and perjury, depending on circumstance, and…

11) Any of the endless left-leaning laws that allow people to be jailed, sued, fined etc for 'discrimination' (isn't it wonderful how hate speech censorship laws can backfire so horribly?)

12) Any legal reprisals for any foreign agent trying to operate in a given country (I do believe spies are exempt from the geneva conventions, especially if they pose as a civilian - which means the shills, if foreign agents, can just 'magically disappear')

20) Attempting to circumvent anti-bot checks with a bot without permission would constitute also computer abuse, as it violates the access permissions of the owner

21) Depending on state law, failing to disclose who your organisation is (even if not politically affiliated) or what your financial interests are, could violate a number of transparency laws

22) The shills failing to delete any data held on you would violate GDPR (yes, an EU law, but that's for the EU shills to get clobbered with - people outside the EU can apply for injunctions against EU based companies)

Talking points that seem legitimate:

There's very few legitimate contrary talking points about Q. I've read slightly more reasonable ones off-site, but the majority are poorly thought out criticisms that don't reflect any prior research which are classic signs of a shill. The 'Q is a LARP' ones classically have no research, but the 'Q is a psyop' usually posits some level of backing (and this is a theory I've publicly presented myself, although there's nothing sufficient to make a clear claim either way).

LARPs never last years, and any reasonable person would have discounting LARP or trolling. Even if somehow it was, most of Q's elements are positive - encouraging political activism, and contrary to the moronic talking points of the media, this is a positive thing.

That said, there is clearly shilling and garbage posting going on. Most of the shills appear to be concentrated on the breads, with only a few keeping eye on tactical threads (like this one) or producing threads to clog up the catalogue.

You can disregard my observations if you want, this is more of a public 'note to self', just thought it'd be interesting to see if anyone had anything to add to this.

A good way to compare shill activity versus other threads is to use TTDDTOT (both part 1 and part 2). Because TTDDTOT is strategically unimportant (it won't be after I post this, so anything from this point forward can be disregarded), the shills don't bother particularly trying to trash the thread.

Compare TTDDTOT to a bread. A bread will have tons of garbage posts. Why does TTDDTOT - a place for 'irrelevant posts', so to speak - have fewer garbage posts than a bread where high quality research should be?: because shills are actively trashing the breads.

The Pulse's shooter's dad was an Afghanistan (I think Prime Minister? A minister of some sort) who received a financial reward from the US government.

There were MK-Ultra signs all over that shooting. The media gets their 4 am talking points, (from Fusion GPS? not sure if we have consensus on that) and put their calls for violence or action out. Mostly they strongly IMPLY that Trump JUST DID SOMETHING SO EGREGIOUS that people should be angry enough to commit violence.
